Oxen
“චත්තාරෝමේ, භික්ඛවේ, බලීබද්දා. කතමේ චත්තාරෝ?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of oxen. What four?
සගවචණ්ඩෝ නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ,
One hostile to its own herd, not others;
පරගවචණ්ඩෝ නෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ,
one hostile to other herds, not its own;
සගවචණ්ඩෝ ච පරගවචණ්ඩෝ ච,
one hostile to both its own herd and others; and
නේව සගවචණ්ඩෝ නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ—
one hostile to neither its own herd nor others.
ඉමේ ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, චත්තාරෝ බලීබද්දා. ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, චත්තාරෝ බලීබද්දූපමා පුග්ගලා සන්තෝ සංවිජ්ජමානා ලෝකස්මිං. කතමේ චත්තාරෝ?
These are the four kinds of oxen. In the same way, these four people similar to oxen are found in the world. What four?
සගවචණ්ඩෝ නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ,
One hostile to their own herd, not others;
පරගවචණ්ඩෝ නෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ,
one hostile to other herds, not their own;
සගවචණ්ඩෝ ච පරගවචණ්ඩෝ ච,
one hostile to both their own herd and others; and
නේව සගවචණ්ඩෝ නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ.
one hostile to neither their own herd nor others.
කථඤ්ච, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ හෝති, නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ? ඉධ, භික්ඛවේ, ඒකච්චෝ පුග්ගලෝ සකපරිසං උබ්බේජේතා හෝති, නෝ පරපරිසං. ඒවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ හෝති, නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ. සේය්යථාපි සෝ, භික්ඛවේ, බලීබද්දෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ, නෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
And how is a person hostile to their own herd, not others? It’s when a person intimidates their own followers, not the followers of others. That’s how a person is hostile to their own herd, not others. That person is like an ox that’s hostile to its own herd, not others.
කථඤ්ච, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ හෝති, නෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ? ඉධ, භික්ඛවේ, ඒකච්චෝ පුග්ගලෝ පරපරිසං උබ්බේජේතා හෝති, නෝ සකපරිසං. ඒවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, පුග්ගලෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ හෝති, නෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ. සේය්යථාපි සෝ, භික්ඛවේ, බලීබද්දෝ පරගවචණ්ඩෝ, නෝ සගවචණ්ඩෝ; තථූපමාහං, භික්ඛවේ, ඉමං පුග්ගලං වදාමි.
And how is a person hostile to other herds, not their own? It’s when a person intimidates the followers of others, not their own. …

And how is a person hostile to neither their own herd nor others? It’s when a person doesn’t intimidate their own followers or the followers of others.
ඉමේ ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, චත්තාරෝ බලීබද්දූපමා පුග්ගලා සන්තෝ සංවිජ්ජමානා ලෝකස්මින්”ති.
These four people similar to oxen are found in the world.”
