“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, รุกฺขาฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of tree. What four?
เผคฺคุ เผคฺคุปริวาโร,
One is a softwood surrounded by softwoods,
เผคฺคุ สารปริวาโร,
one is a softwood surrounded by hardwoods,
สาโร เผคฺคุปริวาโร,
one is a hardwood surrounded by softwoods, and
สาโร สารปริวาโร—
one is a hardwood surrounded by hardwoods.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร รุกฺขาฯ เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร รุกฺขูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
These are the four kinds of tree. In the same way, these four people similar to trees are found in the world. What four?
เผคฺคุ เผคฺคุปริวาโร,
One is a softwood surrounded by softwoods,
เผคฺคุ สารปริวาโร,
one is a softwood surrounded by hardwoods,
สาโร เผคฺคุปริวาโร,
one is a hardwood surrounded by softwoods, and
สาโร สารปริวาโรฯ
one is a hardwood surrounded by hardwoods.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เผคฺคุ โหติ เผคฺคุปริวาโร? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ทุสฺสีโล โหติ ปาปธมฺโม; ปริสาปิสฺส โหติ ทุสฺสีลา ปาปธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เผคฺคุ โหติ เผคฺคุปริวาโรฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, รุกฺโข เผคฺคุ เผคฺคุปริวาโร; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person a softwood surrounded by softwoods? It’s when a person is unethical, of bad character, and their followers are the same. That’s how a person is a softwood surrounded by softwoods. That person is like a softwood tree that’s surrounded by softwoods, I say.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เผคฺคุ โหติ สารปริวาโร? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ทุสฺสีโล โหติ ปาปธมฺโม; ปริสา จ ขฺวสฺส โหติ สีลวตี กลฺยาณธมฺมาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เผคฺคุ โหติ สารปริวาโรฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, รุกฺโข เผคฺคุ สารปริวาโร; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person a softwood surrounded by hardwoods? It’s when a person is unethical, of bad character, but their followers are ethical, of good character. …
