ปฐมวลาหกสุตฺต
Clouds (1st)
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, วลาหกาฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of clouds. What four?
คชฺชิตา โน วสฺสิตา,
One thunders but doesn’t rain,
วสฺสิตา โน คชฺชิตา,
one rains but doesn’t thunder,
เนว คชฺชิตา โน วสฺสิตา,
one neither thunders nor rains, and
คชฺชิตา จ วสฺสิตา จฯ
one both rains and thunders.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร วลาหกาฯ เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร วลาหกูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
These are the four kinds of clouds. In the same way, these four people similar to clouds are found in the world. What four?
คชฺชิตา โน วสฺสิตา,
One thunders but doesn’t rain,
วสฺสิตา โน คชฺชิตา,
one rains but doesn’t thunder,
เนว คชฺชิตา โน วสฺสิตา,
one neither thunders nor rains, and
คชฺชิตา จ วสฺสิตา จฯ
one both rains and thunders.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล คชฺชิตา โหติ โน วสฺสิตา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ภาสิตา โหติ, โน กตฺตาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล คชฺชิตา โหติ, โน วสฺสิตาฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, วลาหโก คชฺชิตา, โน วสฺสิตา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how does a person thunder but not rain? It’s when a person is a talker, not a doer. That’s how a person thunders but doesn’t rain. That person is like a cloud that thunders but doesn’t rain, I say.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล วสฺสิตา โหติ, โน คชฺชิตา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล กตฺตา โหติ, โน ภาสิตาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล วสฺสิตา โหติ, โน คชฺชิตาฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, วลาหโก วสฺสิตา, โน คชฺชิตา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how does a person rain but not thunder? It’s when a person is a doer, not a talker. …
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เนว คชฺชิตา โหติ, โน วสฺสิตา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล เนว ภาสิตา โหติ, โน กตฺตาฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เนว คชฺชิตา โหติ, โน วสฺสิตาฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, วลาหโก เนว คชฺชิตา, โน วสฺสิตา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how does a person neither thunder nor rain? It’s when a person is neither a talker nor a doer. …

And how does a person both thunder and rain? It’s when a person is both a talker and a doer. …
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร วลาหกูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These four people similar to clouds are found in the world.”
