“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, these four people are found in the world. What four?
อตฺตหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โน ปรหิตาย,
One who practices to benefit themselves, but not others;
ปรหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โน อตฺตหิตาย,
one who practices to benefit others, but not themselves;
เนวตฺตหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โน ปรหิตาย,
one who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others; and
อตฺตหิตาย เจว ปฏิปนฺโน ปรหิตาย จฯ
one who practices to benefit both themselves and others.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อตฺตหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรหิตาย? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อตฺตนา ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, โน ปรํ ปาณาติปาตา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, โน ปรํ อทินฺนาทานา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, โน ปรํ กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, โน ปรํ มุสาวาทา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, โน ปรํ สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อตฺตหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรหิตายฯ
And how does a person practice to benefit themselves, but not others? It’s when a person doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or use alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. But they don’t encourage others to do the same. That’s how a person practices to benefit themselves, but not others.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ปรหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โหติ, โน อตฺตหิตาย? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อตฺตนา ปาณาติปาตา อปฺปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ปรํ ปาณาติปาตา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา อทินฺนาทานา อปฺปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ปรํ อทินฺนาทานา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา อปฺปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ปรํ กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา มุสาวาทา อปฺปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ปรํ มุสาวาทา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติ; อตฺตนา สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา อปฺปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ปรํ สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา เวรมณิยา สมาทเปติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ปรหิตาย ปฏิปนฺโน โหติ, โน อตฺตหิตายฯ
And how does a person practice to benefit others, but not themselves? It’s when a person kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, lies, and uses alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. But they encourage others to not do these things. That’s how a person practices to benefit others, but not themselves.

And how does a person practice to benefit neither themselves nor others? It’s when a person kills, etc. … and doesn’t encourage others to not do these things. That’s how a person practices to benefit neither themselves nor others.
