Vipers
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, อาสีวิสาฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of viper. What four?
อาคตวิโส น โฆรวิโส,
One whose venom is fast-acting but not lethal,
โฆรวิโส น อาคตวิโส,
one whose venom is lethal but not fast-acting,
อาคตวิโส จ โฆรวิโส จ,
one whose venom is both fast-acting and lethal, and
เนวาคตวิโส น โฆรวิโส—
one whose venom is neither fast-acting nor lethal.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร อาสีวิสาฯ เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร อาสีวิสูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
These are the four kinds of viper. In the same way, these four people similar to vipers are found in the world. What four?
อาคตวิโส น โฆรวิโส,
One whose venom is fast-acting but not lethal,
โฆรวิโส น อาคตวิโส,
one whose venom is lethal but not fast-acting,
อาคตวิโส จ โฆรวิโส จ,
one whose venom is both fast-acting and lethal, and
เนวาคตวิโส น โฆรวิโสฯ
one whose venom is neither fast-acting nor lethal.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาคตวิโส โหติ, น โฆรวิโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อภิณฺหํ กุชฺฌติฯ โส จ ขฺวสฺส โกโธ น ทีฆรตฺตํ อนุเสติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาคตวิโส โหติ, น โฆรวิโสฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, อาสีวิโส อาคตวิโส, น โฆรวิโส; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person’s venom fast-acting but not lethal? It’s when a person is often angry, but their anger doesn’t linger long. That’s how a person’s venom is fast-acting but not lethal. That person is like a viper whose venom is fast-acting but not lethal.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล โฆรวิโส โหติ, น อาคตวิโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล น เหว โข อภิณฺหํ กุชฺฌติฯ โส จ ขฺวสฺส โกโธ ทีฆรตฺตํ อนุเสติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล โฆรวิโส โหติ, น อาคตวิโสฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, อาสีวิโส โฆรวิโส, น อาคตวิโส; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person’s venom lethal but not fast-acting? It’s when a person is not often angry, but their anger lingers for a long time.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาคตวิโส จ โหติ โฆรวิโส จ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อภิณฺหํ กุชฺฌติฯ โส จ ขฺวสฺส โกโธ ทีฆรตฺตํ อนุเสติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาคตวิโส จ โหติ โฆรวิโส จฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, อาสีวิโส อาคตวิโส จ โฆรวิโส จ; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person’s venom both fast-acting and lethal? It’s when a person is often angry, and their anger lingers for a long time.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เนวาคตวิโส โหติ น โฆรวิโส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล น เหว โข อภิณฺหํ กุชฺฌติฯ โส จ ขฺวสฺส โกโธ น ทีฆรตฺตํ อนุเสติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล เนวาคตวิโส โหติ, น โฆรวิโสฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, อาสีวิโส เนวาคตวิโส น โฆรวิโส; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person’s venom neither fast-acting nor lethal? It’s when a person is not often angry, and their anger doesn’t linger long.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร อาสีวิสูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These four people similar to vipers are found in the world.”
