Mice
“จตโสฺส อิมา, ภิกฺขเว, มูสิกาฯ กตมา จตโสฺส?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of mice. What four?
คาธํ กตฺตา โน วสิตา,
One makes a hole but doesn’t live in it,
วสิตา โน คาธํ กตฺตา,
one lives in a hole but doesn’t make it,
เนว คาธํ กตฺตา โน วสิตา,
one neither makes a hole nor lives in it, and
คาธํ กตฺตา จ วสิตา จ—
one both makes a hole and lives in it.
อิมา โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตโสฺส มูสิกาฯ เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร มูสิกูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
These are the four kinds of mice. In the same way, these four people similar to mice are found in the world. What four?
คาธํ กตฺตา โน วสิตา,
One makes a hole but doesn’t live in it,
วสิตา โน คาธํ กตฺตา,
one lives in a hole but doesn’t make it,
เนว คาธํ กตฺตา โน วสิตา,
one neither makes a hole nor lives in it, and
คาธํ กตฺตา จ วสิตา จฯ
one both makes a hole and lives in it.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล คาธํ กตฺตา โหติ โน วสิตา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ธมฺมํ ปริยาปุณาติ—สุตฺตํ, เคยฺยํ, เวยฺยากรณํ, คาถํ, อุทานํ, อิติวุตฺตกํ, ชาตกํ, อพฺภุตธมฺมํ, เวทลฺลํฯ โส ‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ยถาภูตํ นปฺปชานาติ …เป… ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ยถาภูตํ นปฺปชานาติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล คาธํ กตฺตา โหติ, โน วสิตาฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, มูสิกา คาธํ กตฺตา, โน วสิตา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how does a person make a hole but not live in it? It’s when a person memorizes the teaching—statements, songs, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and classifications. But they don’t really understand: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. That’s how a person makes a hole but doesn’t live in it. That person is like a mouse that makes a hole but doesn’t live in it, I say.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล วสิตา โหติ, โน คาธํ กตฺตา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ธมฺมํ น ปริยาปุณาติ—สุตฺตํ, เคยฺยํ, เวยฺยากรณํ, คาถํ, อุทานํ, อิติวุตฺตกํ, ชาตกํ, อพฺภุตธมฺมํ, เวทลฺลํฯ โส ‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ …เป… ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล วสิตา โหติ, โน คาธํ กตฺตาฯ เสยฺยถาปิ สา, ภิกฺขเว, มูสิกา วสิตา โหติ, โน คาธํ กตฺตา; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ, ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how does a person live in a hole but not make it? It’s when a person doesn’t memorize the teaching … But they really understand: ‘This is suffering’ …

And how does a person neither make a hole nor live in it? It’s when a person doesn’t memorize the teaching … Nor do they really understand: ‘This is suffering’ …
