พลีพทฺทสุตฺต
Oxen
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, พลีพทฺทาฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four kinds of oxen. What four?
สควจณฺโฑ โน ปรควจณฺโฑ,
One hostile to its own herd, not others;
ปรควจณฺโฑ โน สควจณฺโฑ,
one hostile to other herds, not its own;
สควจณฺโฑ จ ปรควจณฺโฑ จ,
one hostile to both its own herd and others; and
เนว สควจณฺโฑ โน ปรควจณฺโฑ—
one hostile to neither its own herd nor others.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร พลีพทฺทาฯ เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร พลีพทฺทูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
These are the four kinds of oxen. In the same way, these four people similar to oxen are found in the world. What four?
สควจณฺโฑ โน ปรควจณฺโฑ,
One hostile to their own herd, not others;
ปรควจณฺโฑ โน สควจณฺโฑ,
one hostile to other herds, not their own;
สควจณฺโฑ จ ปรควจณฺโฑ จ,
one hostile to both their own herd and others; and
เนว สควจณฺโฑ โน ปรควจณฺโฑฯ
one hostile to neither their own herd nor others.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สควจณฺโฑ โหติ, โน ปรควจณฺโฑ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล สกปริสํ อุพฺเพเชตา โหติ, โน ปรปริสํฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สควจณฺโฑ โหติ, โน ปรควจณฺโฑฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, พลีพทฺโท สควจณฺโฑ, โน ปรควจณฺโฑ; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person hostile to their own herd, not others? It’s when a person intimidates their own followers, not the followers of others. That’s how a person is hostile to their own herd, not others. That person is like an ox that’s hostile to its own herd, not others.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ปรควจณฺโฑ โหติ, โน สควจณฺโฑ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ปรปริสํ อุพฺเพเชตา โหติ, โน สกปริสํฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ปรควจณฺโฑ โหติ, โน สควจณฺโฑฯ เสยฺยถาปิ โส, ภิกฺขเว, พลีพทฺโท ปรควจณฺโฑ, โน สควจณฺโฑ; ตถูปมาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิมํ ปุคฺคลํ วทามิฯ
And how is a person hostile to other herds, not their own? It’s when a person intimidates the followers of others, not their own. …

And how is a person hostile to neither their own herd nor others? It’s when a person doesn’t intimidate their own followers or the followers of others.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร พลีพทฺทูปมา ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These four people similar to oxen are found in the world.”
