The Goad
“จตฺตาโรเม, ภิกฺขเว, ภทฺรา อสฺสาชานียา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม จตฺตาโร?
“Bhikkhus, these four fine thoroughbreds are found in the world. What four?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย ปโตทจฺฉายํ ทิสฺวา สํวิชฺชติ สํเวคํ อาปชฺชติ: ‘กึ นุ โข มํ อชฺช อสฺสทมฺมสารถิ การณํ กาเรสฺสติ, กิมสฺสาหํ ปฏิกโรมี'ติฯ เอวรูโปปิ, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย โหติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมาโน โลกสฺมึฯ
One fine thoroughbred is moved to act when it sees the shadow of the goad, thinking: ‘What task will the horse trainer have me do today? How should I respond?’ Some fine thoroughbreds are like that. This is the first fine thoroughbred found in the world.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย น เหว โข ปโตทจฺฉายํ ทิสฺวา สํวิชฺชติ สํเวคํ อาปชฺชติ, อปิ จ โข โลมเวธวิทฺโธ สํวิชฺชติ สํเวคํ อาปชฺชติ: ‘กึ นุ โข มํ อชฺช อสฺสทมฺมสารถิ การณํ กาเรสฺสติ, กิมสฺสาหํ ปฏิกโรมี'ติฯ เอวรูโปปิ, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย โหติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติโย ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมาโน โลกสฺมึฯ

These are the four fine thoroughbreds found in the world.

One fine thoroughbred person hears about the suffering or death of a woman or man in such and such village or town. They’re moved to act by this, and strive effectively. Applying themselves, they directly realize the ultimate truth, and see it with penetrating wisdom. This person is like the fine thoroughbred that’s shaken when it sees the shadow of the goad. Some fine thoroughbred people are like that. This is the first fine thoroughbred person found in the world.

They’re moved to act by this, and strive effectively. Applying themselves, they directly realize the ultimate truth, and see it with penetrating wisdom. This person is like the fine thoroughbred that’s moved to act when its hairs are struck. Some fine thoroughbred people are like that. This is the second fine thoroughbred person found in the world.

They’re moved to act by this, and strive effectively. Applying themselves, they directly realize the ultimate truth, and see it with penetrating wisdom. This person is like the fine thoroughbred that’s moved to act when its skin is struck. Some fine thoroughbred people are like that. This is the third fine thoroughbred person found in the world.

They’re moved to act by this, and strive effectively. Applying themselves, they directly realize the ultimate truth, and see it with penetrating wisdom. This person is like the fine thoroughbred that’s moved to act when its bone is struck. Some fine thoroughbred people are like that. This is the fourth fine thoroughbred person found in the world.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร ภทฺรา ปุริสาชานียา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
