ปฐมสนฺทิฏฺฐิกสุตฺต

อถ โข โมฬิยสีวโก ปริพฺพาชโก เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควตา สทฺธึ สมฺโมทิฯ สมฺโมทนียํ กถํ สารณียํ วีติสาเรตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข โมฬิยสีวโก ปริพฺพาชโก ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
And then the wanderer Moḷiyasīvaka went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“‘สนฺทิฏฺฐิโก ธมฺโม, สนฺทิฏฺฐิโก ธมฺโม'ติ, ภนฺเต, วุจฺจติฯ กิตฺตาวตา นุ โข, ภนฺเต, สนฺทิฏฺฐิโก ธมฺโม โหติ อกาลิโก เอหิปสฺสิโก โอปเนยฺยิโก ปจฺจตฺตํ เวทิตพฺโพ วิญฺญูหี”ติ?
“Sir, they speak of ‘a teaching apparent in the present life’. In what way is the teaching apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves?”
“เตน หิ, สีวก, ตญฺเญเวตฺถ ปฏิปุจฺฉามิฯ ยถา เต ขเมยฺย ตถา นํ พฺยากเรยฺยาสิฯ ตํ กึ มญฺญสิ, สีวก, สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โลภํ ‘อตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โลโภ'ติ ปชานาสิ, อสนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โลภํ ‘นตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โลโภ'ติ ปชานาสี”ติ?
“Well then, Sīvaka, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like. What do you think, Sīvaka? When there’s greed in you, do you understand ‘I have greed in me’? And when there’s no greed in you, do you understand ‘I have no greed in me’?”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“Yes, sir.”
“ยํ โข ตฺวํ, สีวก, สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โลภํ ‘อตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โลโภ'ติ ปชานาสิ, อสนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โลภํ ‘นตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โลโภ'ติ ปชานาสิ—เอวมฺปิ โข, สีวก, สนฺทิฏฺฐิโก ธมฺโม โหติ …เป…ฯ
“Since you know this, this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.
ตํ กึ มญฺญสิ, สีวก, สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โทสํ …เป… สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหํ …เป… สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โลภธมฺมํ …เป… สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โทสธมฺมํ …เป… สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺมํ ‘อตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺโม'ติ ปชานาสิ, อสนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺมํ ‘นตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺโม'ติ ปชานาสี”ติ?
What do you think, Sīvaka? When there’s hate … delusion … greedy thoughts … hateful thoughts … When there are delusional thoughts in you, do you understand ‘I have delusional thoughts in me’? And when there are no delusional thoughts in you, do you understand ‘I have no delusional thoughts in me’?”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“Yes, sir.”
“ยํ โข ตฺวํ, สีวก, สนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺมํ ‘อตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺโม'ติ ปชานาสิ, อสนฺตํ วา อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺมํ ‘นตฺถิ เม อชฺฌตฺตํ โมหธมฺโม'ติ ปชานาสิ—เอวํ โข, สีวก, สนฺทิฏฺฐิโก ธมฺโม โหติ อกาลิโก เอหิปสฺสิโก โอปเนยฺยิโก ปจฺจตฺตํ เวทิตพฺโพ วิญฺญูหี”ติฯ
“Since you know this, this is how the teaching is apparent in the present life, immediately effective, inviting inspection, relevant, so that sensible people can know it for themselves.”
“อภิกฺกนฺตํ, ภนฺเต, อภิกฺกนฺตํ, ภนฺเต …เป… อุปาสกํ มํ, ภนฺเต, ภควา ธาเรตุ อชฺชตคฺเค ปาณุเปตํ สรณํ คตนฺ”ติฯ
“Excellent, sir! Excellent! From this day forth, may the Buddha remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
