ทารุกฺขนฺธสุตฺต
A Tree Trunk
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ราชคเห วิหรติ คิชฺฌกูเฏ ปพฺพเตฯ
So I have heard. At one time Venerable Sāriputta was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain.
อถ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย สมฺพหุเลหิ ภิกฺขูหิ สทฺธึ คิชฺฌกูฏา ปพฺพตา โอโรหนฺโต อทฺทส อญฺญตรสฺมึ ปเทเส มหนฺตํ ทารุกฺขนฺธํฯ ทิสฺวา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ปสฺสถ โน, อาวุโส, ตุเมฺห อมุํ มหนฺตํ ทารุกฺขนฺธนฺ”ติ?
Then Venerable Sāriputta robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, descended the Vulture’s Peak together with several bhikkhus. At a certain spot he saw a large tree trunk, and he addressed the bhikkhus, “Friends, do you see this large tree trunk?”
“เอวมาวุโส”ติฯ
“Yes, friend.”
“อากงฺขมาโน, อาวุโส, ภิกฺขุ อิทฺธิมา เจโตวสิปฺปตฺโต อมุํ ทารุกฺขนฺธํ ปถวีเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺยฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? อตฺถิ, อาวุโส, อมุมฺหิ ทารุกฺขนฺเธ ปถวีธาตุ, ยํ นิสฺสาย ภิกฺขุ อิทฺธิมา เจโตวสิปฺปตฺโต อมุํ ทารุกฺขนฺธํ ปถวีเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺยฯ อากงฺขมาโน, อาวุโส, ภิกฺขุ อิทฺธิมา เจโตวสิปฺปตฺโต อมุํ ทารุกฺขนฺธํ อาโปเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺย …เป… เตโชเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺย … วาโยเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺย … สุภนฺเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺย … อสุภนฺเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺยฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? อตฺถิ, อาวุโส, อมุมฺหิ ทารุกฺขนฺเธ อสุภธาตุ, ยํ นิสฺสาย ภิกฺขุ อิทฺธิมา เจโตวสิปฺปตฺโต อมุํ ทารุกฺขนฺธํ อสุภนฺเตฺวว อธิมุจฺเจยฺยา”ติฯ
“If they wanted to, a bhikkhu with psychic powers who has mastered their mind could determine this tree trunk to be nothing but earth. Why is that? Because the earth element exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a bhikkhu with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but earth. If they wanted to, a bhikkhu with psychic powers who has mastered their mind could determine this tree trunk to be nothing but water. … Or they could determine it to be nothing but fire … Or they could determine it to be nothing but air … Or they could determine it to be nothing but beautiful … Or they could determine it to be nothing but ugly. Why is that? Because the element of ugliness exists in the tree trunk. Relying on that a bhikkhu with psychic powers could determine it to be nothing but ugly.”
