A Gift With Six Factors
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
เตน โข ปน สมเยน เวฬุกณฺฑกี นนฺทมาตา อุปาสิกา สาริปุตฺตโมคฺคลฺลานปฺปมุเข ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆ ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ ทกฺขิณํ ปติฏฺฐาเปติฯ อทฺทสา โข ภควา ทิพฺเพน จกฺขุนา วิสุทฺเธน อติกฺกนฺตมานุสเกน เวฬุกณฺฑกึ นนฺทมาตรํ อุปาสิกํ สาริปุตฺตโมคฺคลฺลานปฺปมุเข ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆ ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ ทกฺขิณํ ปติฏฺฐาเปนฺตึฯ ทิสฺวา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ:
Now at that time Veḷukaṇṭakī, Nanda’s mother, was preparing a religious donation with six factors for the bhikkhu Saṅgha headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna. The Buddha saw her doing this, with his clairvoyance that is purified and superhuman, and he addressed the bhikkhus:
“เอสา, ภิกฺขเว, เวฬุกณฺฑกี นนฺทมาตา อุปาสิกา สาริปุตฺตโมคฺคลฺลานปฺปมุเข ภิกฺขุสงฺเฆ ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ ทกฺขิณํ ปติฏฺฐาเปติฯ
“This Veḷukaṇṭakī, Nanda’s mother, is preparing a religious donation with six factors for the bhikkhu Saṅgha headed by Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตา ทกฺขิณา โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ทายกสฺส ตีณงฺคานิ โหนฺติ, ปฏิคฺคาหกานํ ตีณงฺคานิฯ
And how does a religious donation have six factors? Three factors apply to the donor and three to the recipients.
กตมานิ ทายกสฺส ตีณงฺคานิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ทายโก ปุพฺเพว ทานา สุมโน โหติ, ททํ จิตฺตํ ปสาเทติ, ทตฺวา อตฺตมโน โหติฯ อิมานิ ทายกสฺส ตีณงฺคานิฯ
What three factors apply to the donor? It’s when a donor is in a good mood before giving, while giving they feel confident, and after giving they’re uplifted. These three factors apply to the donor.
กตมานิ ปฏิคฺคาหกานํ ตีณงฺคานิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฏิคฺคาหกา วีตราคา วา โหนฺติ ราควินยาย วา ปฏิปนฺนา, วีตโทสา วา โหนฺติ โทสวินยาย วา ปฏิปนฺนา, วีตโมหา วา โหนฺติ โมหวินยาย วา ปฏิปนฺนาฯ อิมานิ ปฏิคฺคาหกานํ ตีณงฺคานิฯ
What three factors apply to the recipients? It’s when the recipients are free of greed, hate, and delusion, or practicing to be free of them. These three factors apply to the recipients.
อิติ ทายกสฺส ตีณงฺคานิ, ปฏิคฺคาหกานํ ตีณงฺคานิฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตา ทกฺขิณา โหติฯ
Thus three factors apply to the donor and three to the recipients. That’s how a religious donation has six factors.
เอวํ ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตาย, ภิกฺขเว, ทกฺขิณาย น สุกรํ ปุญฺญสฺส ปมาณํ คเหตุํ: ‘เอตฺตโก ปุญฺญาภิสนฺโท กุสลาภิสนฺโท สุขสฺสาหาโร โสวคฺคิโก สุขวิปาโก สคฺคสํวตฺตนิโก อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตตี'ติฯ อถ โข อสงฺเขฺยโยฺย อปฺปเมโยฺย มหาปุญฺญกฺขนฺโธเตฺวว สงฺขํ คจฺฉติฯ
It’s not easy to grasp the merit of such a six-factored donation by saying that this is the extent of their overflowing merit, overflowing goodness that nurtures happiness and is conducive to heaven, ripening in happiness and leading to heaven. And it leads to what is likable, desirable, agreeable, to welfare and happiness. It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of merit.
เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, มหาสมุทฺเท น สุกรํ อุทกสฺส ปมาณํ คเหตุํ: ‘เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกานีติ วา เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกสตานีติ วา เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกสหสฺสานีติ วา เอตฺตกานิ อุทกาฬฺหกสตสหสฺสานี'ติ วาฯ อถ โข อสงฺเขฺยโยฺย อปฺปเมโยฺย มหาอุทกกฺขนฺโธเตฺวว สงฺขํ คจฺฉติฯ เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ ฉฬงฺคสมนฺนาคตาย ทกฺขิณาย น สุกรํ ปุญฺญสฺส ปมาณํ คเหตุํ: ‘เอตฺตโก ปุญฺญาภิสนฺโท กุสลาภิสนฺโท สุขสฺสาหาโร โสวคฺคิโก สุขวิปาโก สคฺคสํวตฺตนิโก อิฏฺฐาย กนฺตาย มนาปาย หิตาย สุขาย สํวตฺตตี'ติฯ อถ โข อสงฺเขฺยโยฺย อปฺปเมโยฺย มหาปุญฺญกฺขนฺโธเตฺวว สงฺขํ คจฺฉตี”ติฯ
It’s like trying to grasp how much water is in the ocean. It’s not easy to say how many gallons, how many hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of gallons there are. It’s simply reckoned as an incalculable, immeasurable, great mass of water. In the same way, it’s not easy to grasp the merit of such a six-factored donation …
“ปุพฺเพว ทานา สุมโน, ททํ จิตฺตํ ปสาทเย; ทตฺวา อตฺตมโน โหติ, เอสา ยญฺญสฺส สมฺปทาฯ
A good mood before giving, confidence while giving, feeling uplifted after giving: this is the perfect sacrifice.
วีตราคา วีตโทสา, วีตโมหา อนาสวา; เขตฺตํ ยญฺญสฺส สมฺปนฺนํ, สญฺญตา พฺรหฺมจารโยฯ
Free of greed, free of hate, free of delusion, undefiled; this is the field for the perfect sacrifice, the disciplined spiritual practitioners.
สยํ อาจมยิตฺวาน, ทตฺวา สเกหิ ปาณิภิ; อตฺตโน ปรโต เจโส, ยญฺโญ โหติ มหปฺผโลฯ
After rinsing, you give with your own hands. This sacrifice is very fruitful for both yourself and others.
เอวํ ยชิตฺวา เมธาวี, สทฺโธ มุตฺเตน เจตสา; อพฺยาปชฺชํ สุขํ โลกํ, ปณฺฑิโต อุปปชฺชตี”ติฯ
When an intelligent, faithful person, sacrifices like this, with a mind of letting go, that astute one is reborn in a happy, pleasing world.”
