Non-decline (1st)
อถ โข อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา เกวลกปฺปํ เชตวนํ โอภาเสตฺวา เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข สา เทวตา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him:
“ฉยิเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ฉ? สตฺถุคารวตา, ธมฺมคารวตา, สงฺฆคารวตา, สิกฺขาคารวตา, อปฺปมาทคารวตา, ปฏิสนฺถารคารวตา—อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, ฉ ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี”ติฯ
“Sir, these six things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu. What six? Respect for the Teacher, for the teaching, for the Saṅgha, for the training, for diligence, and for hospitality. These six things don’t lead to the decline of a bhikkhu.”
อิทมโวจ สา เทวตาฯ สมนุญฺโญ สตฺถา อโหสิฯ อถ โข สา เทวตา “สมนุญฺโญ เม สตฺถา”ติ ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายิฯ
That’s what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
อถ โข ภควา ตสฺสา รตฺติยา อจฺจเยน ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “อิมํ, ภิกฺขเว, รตฺตึ อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา เกวลกปฺปํ เชตวนํ โอภาเสตฺวา เยนาหํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตา มํ เอตทโวจ: ‘ฉยิเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ฉ? สตฺถุคารวตา, ธมฺมคารวตา, สงฺฆคารวตา, สิกฺขาคารวตา, อปฺปมาทคารวตา, ปฏิสนฺถารคารวตา—อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, ฉ ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน อปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติฯ
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the bhikkhus all that had happened, adding:
อิทมโวจ, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตาฯ อิทํ วตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายีติฯ
สตฺถุครุ ธมฺมครุ, สงฺเฆ จ ติพฺพคารโว; อปฺปมาทครุ ภิกฺขุ, ปฏิสนฺถารคารโว; อภพฺโพ ปริหานาย, นิพฺพานเสฺสว สนฺติเก”ติฯ
“Respect for the Teacher and the teaching, and keen respect for the Saṅgha; a bhikkhu who respects diligence and hospitality can’t decline, and has drawn near to Nibbana.”
