“‘ภยนฺ'ติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ; ‘ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ; ‘โรโค'ติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ; ‘คณฺโฑ'ติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ; ‘สงฺโค'ติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ; ‘ปงฺโก'ติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํฯ
“‘Danger’, bhikkhus, is a term for sensual pleasures. ‘Suffering’, ‘disease’, ‘boil’, ‘snare’, and ‘bog’ are terms for sensual pleasures.
กสฺมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, ‘ภยนฺ'ติ กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ? กามราครตฺตายํ, ภิกฺขเว, ฉนฺทราควินิพทฺโธ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกาปิ ภยา น ปริมุจฺจติ, สมฺปรายิกาปิ ภยา น ปริมุจฺจติ, ตสฺมา ‘ภยนฺ'ติ กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํฯ
And why is ‘danger’ a term for sensual pleasures? Someone who is besotted by sensual greed and shackled by lustful desire is not freed from dangers in the present life or in lives to come. That is why ‘danger’ is a term for sensual pleasures.
กสฺมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุกฺขนฺติ …เป… โรโคติ … คณฺโฑติ … สงฺโคติ … ปงฺโกติ กามานเมตํ อธิวจนํ? กามราครตฺตายํ, ภิกฺขเว, ฉนฺทราควินิพทฺโธ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกาปิ ปงฺกา น ปริมุจฺจติ, สมฺปรายิกาปิ ปงฺกา น ปริมุจฺจติ, ตสฺมา ‘ปงฺโก'ติ กามานเมตํ อธิวจนนฺติฯ
And why are ‘suffering’, ‘disease’, ‘boil’, ‘snare’, and ‘bog’ terms for sensual pleasures? Someone who is besotted by sensual greed and shackled by lustful desire is not freed from suffering, disease, boils, chains, or bogs in the present life or in lives to come. That is why these are terms for sensual pleasures.
ภยํ ทุกฺขํ โรโค คณฺโฑ, สงฺโค ปงฺโก จ อุภยํ; เอเต กามา ปวุจฺจนฺติ, ยตฺถ สตฺโต ปุถุชฺชโนฯ
Danger, suffering, disease, boils, and snares and bogs both. These describe the sensual pleasures to which ordinary people are attached.
อุปาทาเน ภยํ ทิสฺวา, ชาติมรณสมฺภเว; อนุปาทา วิมุจฺจนฺติ, ชาติมรณสงฺขเยฯ
Seeing the danger in grasping, the origin of birth and death, the unattached are freed with the ending of birth and death.
เต เขมปฺปตฺตา สุขิโน, ทิฏฺฐธมฺมาภินิพฺพุตา; สพฺพเวรภยาตีตา, สพฺพทุกฺขํ อุปจฺจคุนฺ”ติฯ
Happy, they’ve come to a safe place, extinguished in this very life. They’ve gone beyond all threats and dangers, and risen above all suffering.”
