สามกสุตฺต
At Sāma Village
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สกฺเกสุ วิหรติ สามคามเก โปกฺขรณิยายํฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans near the little village of Sāma, by a lotus pond.
อถ โข อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา เกวลกปฺปํ โปกฺขรณิยํ โอภาเสตฺวา เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข สา เทวตา ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ: “ตโยเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน ปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ตโย? กมฺมารามตา, ภสฺสารามตา, นิทฺทารามตา—อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, ตโย ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน ปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี”ติฯ
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire lotus pond, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Sir, three qualities lead to the decline of a bhikkhu. What three? Relishing work, talk, and sleep. These three qualities lead to the decline of a bhikkhu.”
อิทมโวจ สา เทวตาฯ สมนุญฺโญ สตฺถา อโหสิฯ อถ โข สา เทวตา “สมนุญฺโญ เม สตฺถา”ติ ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายิฯ
That’s what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
อถ โข ภควา ตสฺสา รตฺติยา อจฺจเยน ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “อิมํ, ภิกฺขเว, รตฺตึ อญฺญตรา เทวตา อภิกฺกนฺตาย รตฺติยา อภิกฺกนฺตวณฺณา เกวลกปฺปํ โปกฺขรณิยํ โอภาเสตฺวา เยนาหํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ อฏฺฐาสิฯ เอกมนฺตํ ฐิตา โข, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตา มํ เอตทโวจ: ‘ตโยเม, ภนฺเต, ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน ปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ตโย? กมฺมารามตา, ภสฺสารามตา, นิทฺทารามตา—อิเม โข, ภนฺเต, ตโย ธมฺมา ภิกฺขุโน ปริหานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติฯ
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the bhikkhus all that had happened, adding:
อิทมโวจ, ภิกฺขเว, สา เทวตาฯ อิทํ วตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา ปทกฺขิณํ กตฺวา ตตฺเถวนฺตรธายิฯ เตสํ โว, ภิกฺขเว, อลาภา เตสํ ทุลฺลทฺธํ, เย โว เทวตาปิ ชานนฺติ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหิ ปริหายมาเนฯ อปเรปิ, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปริหานิเย ธมฺเม เทเสสฺสามิฯ ตํ สุณาถ, สาธุกํ มนสิ กโรถ, ภาสิสฺสามี”ติฯ
“It’s unfortunate for those of you who even the deities know are declining in skillful qualities. I will teach you three more qualities that lead to decline. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ติ โข เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“กตเม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปริหานิยา ธมฺมา? สงฺคณิการามตา, โทวจสฺสตา, ปาปมิตฺตตา—อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปริหานิยา ธมฺมาฯ
“And what, bhikkhus, are three qualities that lead to decline? Enjoyment of company, being hard to admonish, and having bad friends. These three qualities lead to decline.
เย หิ เกจิ, ภิกฺขเว, อตีตมทฺธานํ ปริหายึสุ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหิ, สพฺเพเต อิเมเหว ฉหิ ธมฺเมหิ ปริหายึสุ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหิฯ เยปิ หิ เกจิ, ภิกฺขเว, อนาคตมทฺธานํ ปริหายิสฺสนฺติ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหิ, สพฺเพเต อิเมเหว ฉหิ ธมฺเมหิ ปริหายิสฺสนฺติ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหิฯ เยปิ หิ เกจิ, ภิกฺขเว, เอตรหิ ปริหายนฺติ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหิ, สพฺเพเต อิเมเหว ฉหิ ธมฺเมหิ ปริหายนฺติ กุสเลหิ ธมฺเมหี”ติฯ
Whether in the past, future, or present, all those who decline in skillful qualities do so because of these six qualities.”
