အရိယဝံသသုတ္တ
The Noble Traditions
“စတ္တာရောမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယဝံသာ အဂ္ဂညာ ရတ္တညာ ဝံသညာ ပေါရာဏာ အသင်္ကိဏ္ဏာ အသင်္ကိဏ္ဏပုဗ္ဗာ, န သင်္ကီယန္တိ န သင်္ကီယိဿန္တိ, အပ္ပဋိကုဋ္ဌာ သမဏေဟိ ဗြာဟ္မဏေဟိ ဝိညူဟိ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော?
“Bhikkhus, these four noble traditions are primordial, long-standing, traditional, and ancient. They are uncorrupted, as they have been since the beginning. They’re not being corrupted now, nor will they be. Sensible ascetics and brahmins don’t look down on them. What four?
ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု သန္တုဋ္ဌော ဟောတိ ဣတရီတရေန စီဝရေန, ဣတရီတရစီဝရသန္တုဋ္ဌိယာ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, န စ စီဝရဟေတု အနေသနံ အပ္ပတိရူပံ အာပဇ္ဇတိ, အလဒ္ဓါ စ စီဝရံ န ပရိတဿတိ, လဒ္ဓါ စ စီဝရံ အဂဓိတော အမုစ္ဆိတော အနဇ္ဈောသန္နော အာဒီနဝဒဿာဝီ နိဿရဏပညော ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ; တာယ စ ပန ဣတရီတရစီဝရသန္တုဋ္ဌိယာ နေဝတ္တာနုက္ကံသေတိ, နော ပရံ ဝမ္ဘေတိ၊ ယော ဟိ တတ္ထ ဒက္ခော အနလသော သမ္ပဇာနော ပတိဿတော, အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ပေါရာဏေ အဂ္ဂညေ အရိယဝံသေ ဌိတော၊
Firstly, a bhikkhu is content with any kind of robe, and praises such contentment. They don’t try to get hold of a robe in an improper way. They don’t get upset if they don’t get a robe. And if they do get a robe, they use it untied, uninfatuated, unattached, seeing the drawback, and understanding the escape. But they don’t glorify themselves or put others down on account of their contentment. A bhikkhu who is deft, tireless, aware, and mindful in this is said to stand in the ancient, primordial noble tradition.

ပုန စပရံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ဘာဝနာရာမော ဟောတိ ဘာဝနာရတော, ပဟာနာရာမော ဟောတိ ပဟာနရတော; တာယ စ ပန ဘာဝနာရာမတာယ ဘာဝနာရတိယာ ပဟာနာရာမတာယ ပဟာနရတိယာ နေဝတ္တာနုက္ကံသေတိ, နော ပရံ ဝမ္ဘေတိ၊ ယော ဟိ တတ္ထ ဒက္ခော အနလသော သမ္ပဇာနော ပတိဿတော, အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ပေါရာဏေ အဂ္ဂညေ အရိယဝံသေ ဌိတော၊
Furthermore, a bhikkhu enjoys meditation and loves to meditate. They enjoy giving up and love to give up. But they don’t glorify themselves or put down others on account of their love for meditation and giving up. A bhikkhu who is deft, tireless, aware, and mindful in this is said to stand in the ancient, primordial noble tradition.

ဣမေဟိ စ ပန, ဘိက္ခဝေ, စတူဟိ အရိယဝံသေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော ဘိက္ခု ပုရတ္ထိမာယ စေပိ ဒိသာယ ဝိဟရတိ သွေဝ အရတိံ သဟတိ, န တံ အရတိ သဟတိ; ပစ္ဆိမာယ စေပိ ဒိသာယ ဝိဟရတိ သွေဝ အရတိံ သဟတိ, န တံ အရတိ သဟတိ; ဥတ္တရာယ စေပိ ဒိသာယ ဝိဟရတိ သွေဝ အရတိံ သဟတိ, န တံ အရတိ သဟတိ; ဒက္ခိဏာယ စေပိ ဒိသာယ ဝိဟရတိ သွေဝ အရတိံ သဟတိ, န တံ အရတိ သဟတိ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? အရတိရတိသဟော ဟိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဓီရောတိ၊
When a bhikkhu has these four noble traditions, if they live in the east they prevail over discontent, and discontent doesn’t prevail over them. If they live in the west … the north … the south, they prevail over discontent, and discontent doesn’t prevail over them. Why is that? Because a wise one prevails over desire and discontent.
နာရတိ သဟတိ ဓီရံ, နာရတိ ဓီရံ သဟတိ; ဓီရောဝ အရတိံ သဟတိ, ဓီရော ဟိ အရတိဿဟော၊
Discontent doesn’t prevail over a wise one; for the wise one is not beaten by discontent. A wise one prevails over discontent, for the wise one is a beater of discontent.
သဗ္ဗကမ္မဝိဟာယီနံ, ပနုဏ္ဏံ ကော နိဝါရယေ; နေက္ခံ ဇမ္ဗောနဒဿေဝ, ကော တံ နိန္ဒိတုမရဟတိ; ဒေဝါပိ နံ ပသံသန္တိ, ဗြဟ္မုနာပိ ပသံသိတော”တိ၊
Who can hold back the dispeller, who’s thrown away all karma? Like a pendant of river gold, who is worthy to criticize them? Even the gods praise them, and by Brahmā, too, they’re praised.”
