“ตีณิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, กสฺสกสฺส คหปติสฺส อจฺจายิกานิ กรณียานิฯ กตมานิ ตีณิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, กสฺสโก คหปติ สีฆํ สีฆํ เขตฺตํ สุกฏฺฐํ กโรติ สุมติกตํฯ สีฆํ สีฆํ เขตฺตํ สุกฏฺฐํ กริตฺวา สุมติกตํ สีฆํ สีฆํ พีชานิ ปติฏฺฐาเปติฯ สีฆํ สีฆํ พีชานิ ปติฏฺฐาเปตฺวา สีฆํ สีฆํ อุทกํ อภิเนติปิ อปเนติปิฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ กสฺสกสฺส คหปติสฺส อจฺจายิกานิ กรณียานิฯ ตสฺส โข ตํ, ภิกฺขเว, กสฺสกสฺส คหปติสฺส นตฺถิ สา อิทฺธิ วา อานุภาโว วา: ‘อชฺเชว เม ธญฺญานิ ชายนฺตุ, เสฺวว คพฺภีนิ โหนฺตุ, อุตฺตรเสฺวว ปจฺจนฺตู'ติฯ อถ โข, ภิกฺขเว, โหติ โส สมโย ยํ ตสฺส กสฺสกสฺส คหปติสฺส ตานิ ธญฺญานิ อุตุปริณามีนิ ชายนฺติปิ คพฺภีนิปิ โหนฺติ ปจฺจนฺติปิฯ
“Bhikkhus, a farmer has three urgent duties. What three? A farmer swiftly makes sure the field is well ploughed and tilled. Next they swiftly plant seeds in season. When the time is right, they swiftly irrigate or drain the field. These are the three urgent duties of a farmer. That farmer has no special power or ability to say: ‘Let the crops germinate today! Let them flower tomorrow! Let them ripen the day after!’ But there comes a time when that farmer’s crops germinate, flower, and ripen as the seasons change.
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิมานิ ภิกฺขุสฺส อจฺจายิกานิ กรณียานิฯ กตมานิ ตีณิ? อธิสีลสิกฺขาสมาทานํ, อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาสมาทานํ, อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขาสมาทานํ—อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ ภิกฺขุสฺส อจฺจายิกานิ กรณียานิฯ ตสฺส โข ตํ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน นตฺถิ สา อิทฺธิ วา อานุภาโว วา: ‘อชฺเชว เม อนุปาทาย อาสเวหิ จิตฺตํ วิมุจฺจตุ เสฺว วา อุตฺตรเสฺว วา'ติฯ อถ โข, ภิกฺขเว, โหติ โส สมโย ยํ ตสฺส ภิกฺขุโน อธิสีลมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อธิจิตฺตมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อธิปญฺญมฺปิ สิกฺขโต อนุปาทาย อาสเวหิ จิตฺตํ วิมุจฺจติฯ
In the same way, a bhikkhu has three urgent duties. What three? Undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom. These are the three urgent duties of a bhikkhu. That bhikkhu has no special power or ability to say: ‘Let my mind be freed from defilements by not grasping today! Or tomorrow! Or the day after!’ But there comes a time—as that bhikkhu trains in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom—that their mind is freed from defilements by not grasping.
ตสฺมาติห, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ สิกฺขิตพฺพํ: ‘ติพฺโพ โน ฉนฺโท ภวิสฺสติ อธิสีลสิกฺขาสมาทาเน, ติพฺโพ ฉนฺโท ภวิสฺสติ อธิจิตฺตสิกฺขาสมาทาเน, ติพฺโพ ฉนฺโท ภวิสฺสติ อธิปญฺญาสิกฺขาสมาทาเน'ติฯ เอวญฺหิ โว, ภิกฺขเว, สิกฺขิตพฺพนฺ”ติฯ
So you should train like this: ‘We will have keen enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.”
