“สทฺโธ จ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ โหติ, โน จ สีลวา …เป… สีลวา จ, โน จ พหุสฺสุโต … พหุสฺสุโต จ, โน จ ธมฺมกถิโก … ธมฺมกถิโก จ, โน จ ปริสาวจโร … ปริสาวจโร จ, โน จ วิสารโท ปริสาย ธมฺมํ เทเสติ … วิสารโท จ ปริสาย ธมฺมํ เทเสติ, โน จ วินยธโร … วินยธโร จ, โน จ อารญฺญิโก ปนฺตเสนาสโน … อารญฺญิโก จ ปนฺตเสนาสโน, โน จ เย เต สนฺตา วิโมกฺขา อติกฺกมฺม รูเป อารุปฺปา เต กาเยน ผุสิตฺวา วิหรติ … เย เต สนฺตา วิโมกฺขา อติกฺกมฺม รูเป อารุปฺปา เต จ กาเยน ผุสิตฺวา วิหรติ, โน จ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน อปริปูโร โหติฯ เตน ตํ องฺคํ ปริปูเรตพฺพํ: ‘กินฺตาหํ สทฺโธ จ อสฺสํ, สีลวา จ, พหุสฺสุโต จ, ธมฺมกถิโก จ, ปริสาวจโร จ, วิสารโท จ ปริสาย ธมฺมํ เทเสยฺยํ, วินยธโร จ, อารญฺญิโก จ ปนฺตเสนาสโน, เย เต สนฺตา วิโมกฺขา อติกฺกมฺม รูเป อารุปฺปา เต จ กาเยน ผุสิตฺวา วิหเรยฺยํ, อาสวานญฺจ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหเรยฺยนฺ'ติฯ
“A bhikkhu is faithful, but not ethical. … they’re not learned. … they’re not a Dhamma speaker … they don’t frequent assemblies … they don’t teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance … they’re not an expert in the training … they don’t stay in the wilderness, in remote lodgings … they don’t have direct meditative experience of the peaceful liberations that are formless, transcending form … they don’t realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. So they’re incomplete in that respect, and should fulfill it, thinking: ‘How can I become faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the training, one who lives in the wilderness, in remote lodgings, one who gets the formless liberations, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements?’
ยโต จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สทฺโธ จ โหติ, สีลวา จ, พหุสฺสุโต จ, ธมฺมกถิโก จ, ปริสาวจโร จ, วิสารโท จ ปริสาย ธมฺมํ เทเสติ, วินยธโร จ, อารญฺญิโก จ ปนฺตเสนาสโน, เย เต สนฺตา วิโมกฺขา อติกฺกมฺม รูเป อารุปฺปา เต จ กาเยน ผุสิตฺวา วิหรติ, อาสวานญฺจ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ; เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน ปริปูโร โหติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทสหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ สมนฺตปาสาทิโก จ โหติ สพฺพาการปริปูโร จา”ติฯ
When they’re faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, an expert in the monastic law, one who lives in the wilderness, in remote lodgings, one who gets the formless liberations, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements, they’re complete in that respect. A bhikkhu who has these ten qualities is inspiring all around, and is complete in every respect.”
