At Paṅkadhā
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ ကောသလေသု စာရိကံ စရမာနော မဟတာ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃေန သဒ္ဓိံ ယေန သင်္ကဝါ နာမ ကောသလာနံ နိဂမော တဒဝသရိ၊ တတြ သုဒံ ဘဂဝါ သင်္ကဝါယံ ဝိဟရတိ၊
At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus. He arrived at a town of the Kosalans named Paṅkadhā, and stayed there.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန ကဿပဂေါတ္တော နာမ ဘိက္ခု သင်္ကဝါယံ အာဝါသိကော ဟောတိ၊ တတြ သုဒံ ဘဂဝါ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေတိ သမာဒပေတိ သမုတ္တေဇေတိ သမ္ပဟံသေတိ၊ အထ ခေါ ကဿပဂေါတ္တဿ ဘိက္ခုနော ဘဂဝတိ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေန္တေ သမာဒပေန္တေ သမုတ္တေဇေန္တေ သမ္ပဟံသေန္တေ အဟုဒေဝ အက္ခန္တိ အဟု အပ္ပစ္စယော: “အဓိသလ္လိခတေဝါယံ သမဏော”တိ၊
Now, at that time a monk called Kassapagotta was resident at Paṅkadhā. There the Buddha educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk about the training rules. Kassapagotta became quite impatient and bitter, thinking, “This ascetic is much too strict.”
အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ သင်္ကဝါယံ ယထာဘိရန္တံ ဝိဟရိတွာ ယေန ရာဇဂဟံ တေန စာရိကံ ပက္ကာမိ၊ အနုပုဗ္ဗေန စာရိကံ စရမာနော ယေန ရာဇဂဟံ တဒဝသရိ၊ တတြ သုဒံ ဘဂဝါ ရာဇဂဟေ ဝိဟရတိ၊
When the Buddha had stayed in Paṅkadhā as long as he pleased, he set out for Rājagaha. Traveling stage by stage, he arrived at Rājagaha, and stayed there.
အထ ခေါ ကဿပဂေါတ္တဿ ဘိက္ခုနော အစိရပက္ကန္တဿ ဘဂဝတော အဟုဒေဝ ကုက္ကုစ္စံ အဟု ဝိပ္ပဋိသာရော: “အလာဘာ ဝတ မေ, န ဝတ မေ လာဘာ; ဒုလ္လဒ္ဓံ ဝတ မေ, န ဝတ မေ သုလဒ္ဓံ; ယဿ မေ ဘဂဝတိ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေန္တေ သမာဒပေန္တေ သမုတ္တေဇေန္တေ သမ္ပဟံသေန္တေ အဟုဒေဝ အက္ခန္တိ အဟု အပ္ပစ္စယော: ‘အဓိသလ္လိခတေဝါယံ သမဏော'တိ၊ ယန္နူနာဟံ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမေယျံ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝတော သန္တိကေ အစ္စယံ အစ္စယတော ဒေသေယျန်”တိ၊
Soon after the Buddha left, Kassapagotta became quite remorseful and regretful, thinking, “It’s my loss, my misfortune, that when the Buddha was talking about the training rules I became quite impatient and bitter, thinking he was much too strict. Why don’t I go to the Buddha and confess my mistake to him?”
အထ ခေါ ကဿပဂေါတ္တော ဘိက္ခု သေနာသနံ သံသာမေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ ယေန ရာဇဂဟံ တေန ပက္ကာမိ၊ အနုပုဗ္ဗေန ယေန ရာဇဂဟံ ယေန ဂိဇ္ဈကူဋော ပဗ္ဗတော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ ကဿပဂေါတ္တော ဘိက္ခု ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then Kassapagotta set his lodgings in order and, taking his bowl and robe, set out for Rājagaha. Eventually he came to Rājagaha and the Vulture’s Peak. He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened, saying:
“ဧကမိဒံ, ဘန္တေ, သမယံ ဘဂဝါ သင်္ကဝါယံ ဝိဟရတိ, သင်္ကဝါ နာမ ကောသလာနံ နိဂမော၊ တတြ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေသိ သမာဒပေသိ သမုတ္တေဇေသိ သမ္ပဟံသေသိ၊ တဿ မယှံ ဘဂဝတိ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေန္တေ သမာဒပေန္တေ သမုတ္တေဇေန္တေ သမ္ပဟံသေန္တေ အဟုဒေဝ အက္ခန္တိ အဟု အပ္ပစ္စယော: ‘အဓိသလ္လိခတေဝါယံ သမဏော'တိ၊ အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ သင်္ကဝါယံ ယထာဘိရန္တံ ဝိဟရိတွာ ယေန ရာဇဂဟံ တေန စာရိကံ ပက္ကာမိ၊ (…) တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, အစိရပက္ကန္တဿ ဘဂဝတော အဟုဒေဝ ကုက္ကုစ္စံ အဟု ဝိပ္ပဋိသာရော: ‘အလာဘာ ဝတ မေ, န ဝတ မေ လာဘာ; ဒုလ္လဒ္ဓံ ဝတ မေ, န ဝတ မေ သုလဒ္ဓံ; ယဿ မေ ဘဂဝတိ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေန္တေ သမာဒပေန္တေ သမုတ္တေဇေန္တေ သမ္ပဟံသေန္တေ အဟုဒေဝ အက္ခန္တိ အဟု အပ္ပစ္စယော: “အဓိသလ္လိခတေဝါယံ သမဏော”တိ၊ ယန္နူနာဟံ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမေယျံ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝတော သန္တိကေ အစ္စယံ အစ္စယတော ဒေသေယျန်'တိ၊ အစ္စယော မံ, ဘန္တေ, အစ္စဂမာ ယထာဗာလံ ယထာမူဠှံ ယထာအကုသလံ ယဿ မေ ဘဂဝတိ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေန္တေ သမာဒပေန္တေ သမုတ္တေဇေန္တေ သမ္ပဟံသေန္တေ အဟုဒေဝ အက္ခန္တိ အဟု အပ္ပစ္စယော: ‘အဓိသလ္လိခတေဝါယံ သမဏော'တိ၊ တဿ မေ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ အစ္စယံ အစ္စယတော ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှာတု, အာယတိံ သံဝရာယာ”တိ၊
“I have made a mistake, sir. It was foolish, stupid, and unskillful of me to become impatient and bitter when the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the bhikkhus with a Dhamma talk about the training rules, and to think, ‘This ascetic is much too strict.’ Please, sir, accept my mistake for what it is, so I will restrain myself in future.”
“တဂ္ဃ တံ, ကဿပ, အစ္စယော အစ္စဂမာ ယထာဗာလံ ယထာမူဠှံ ယထာအကုသလံ, ယဿ တေ မယိ သိက္ခာပဒပဋိသံယုတ္တာယ ဓမ္မိယာ ကထာယ ဘိက္ခူ သန္ဒဿေန္တေ သမာဒပေန္တေ သမုတ္တေဇေန္တေ သမ္ပဟံသေန္တေ အဟုဒေဝ အက္ခန္တိ အဟု အပ္ပစ္စယော: ‘အဓိသလ္လိခတေဝါယံ သမဏော'တိ၊ ယတော စ ခေါ တွံ, ကဿပ, အစ္စယံ အစ္စယတော ဒိသွာ ယထာဓမ္မံ ပဋိကရောသိ, တံ တေ မယံ ပဋိဂ္ဂဏှာမ၊ ဝုဒ္ဓိဟေသာ, ကဿပ, အရိယဿ ဝိနယေ ယော အစ္စယံ အစ္စယတော ဒိသွာ ယထာဓမ္မံ ပဋိကရောတိ, အာယတိံ သံဝရံ အာပဇ္ဇတိ၊
“Indeed, Kassapa, you made a mistake. But since you have recognized your mistake for what it is, and have dealt with it properly, I accept it. For it is growth in the training of the Noble One to recognize a mistake for what it is, deal with it properly, and commit to restraint in the future.
ထေရော စေပိ, ကဿပ, ဘိက္ခု ဟောတိ န သိက္ခာကာမော န သိက္ခာသမာဒါနဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ယေ စညေ ဘိက္ခူ န သိက္ခာကာမာ တေ စ န သိက္ခာယ သမာဒပေတိ, ယေ စညေ ဘိက္ခူ သိက္ခာကာမာ တေသဉ္စ န ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, ဧဝရူပဿာဟံ, ကဿပ, ထေရဿ ဘိက္ခုနော န ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏာမိ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? သတ္ထာ ဟိဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏတီတိ အညေ နံ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဇေယျုံ, ယေ နံ ဘဇေယျုံ တျာဿ ဒိဋ္ဌာနုဂတိံ အာပဇ္ဇေယျုံ, ယျာဿ ဒိဋ္ဌာနုဂတိံ အာပဇ္ဇေယျုံ တေသံ တံ အဿ ဒီဃရတ္တံ အဟိတာယ ဒုက္ခာယာတိ၊ တသ္မာဟံ, ကဿပ, ဧဝရူပဿ ထေရဿ ဘိက္ခုနော န ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏာမိ၊
Kassapa, take the case of a senior bhikkhu who doesn’t want to train and doesn’t praise taking up the training. They don’t encourage other bhikkhus who don’t want to train to take up the training. And they don’t truthfully and correctly praise at the right time those bhikkhus who do want to train. I don’t praise that kind of senior bhikkhu. Why is that? Because, hearing that I praised that bhikkhu, other bhikkhus might want to keep company with them. Then they might follow their example, which would be for their lasting harm and suffering. That’s why I don’t praise that kind of senior bhikkhu.

Take the case of a middle bhikkhu who doesn’t want to train …
နဝေါ စေပိ, ကဿပ, ဘိက္ခု ဟောတိ န သိက္ခာကာမော န သိက္ခာသမာဒါနဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ယေ စညေ ဘိက္ခူ န သိက္ခာကာမာ တေ စ န သိက္ခာယ သမာဒပေတိ, ယေ စညေ ဘိက္ခူ သိက္ခာကာမာ တေသဉ္စ န ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, ဧဝရူပဿာဟံ, ကဿပ, နဝဿ ဘိက္ခုနော န ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏာမိ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? သတ္ထာ ဟိဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏတီတိ အညေ နံ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဇေယျုံ, ယေ နံ ဘဇေယျုံ တျာဿ ဒိဋ္ဌာနုဂတိံ အာပဇ္ဇေယျုံ, ယျာဿ ဒိဋ္ဌာနုဂတိံ အာပဇ္ဇေယျုံ တေသံ တံ အဿ ဒီဃရတ္တံ အဟိတာယ ဒုက္ခာယာတိ၊ တသ္မာဟံ, ကဿပ, ဧဝရူပဿ နဝဿ ဘိက္ခုနော န ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘဏာမိ၊
Take the case of a junior bhikkhu who doesn’t want to train … That’s why I don’t praise that kind of junior bhikkhu.

Kassapa, take the case of a senior bhikkhu who does want to train and praises taking up the training. They encourage other bhikkhus who don’t want to train to take up the training. And they truthfully and correctly praise at the right time those bhikkhus who do want to train. I praise that kind of senior bhikkhu. Why is that? Because, hearing that I praised that bhikkhu, other bhikkhus might want to keep company with them. Then they might follow their example, which would be for their lasting welfare and happiness. That’s why I praise that kind of senior bhikkhu.
