Enjoying Company
“‘โส วต, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สงฺคณิการาโม สงฺคณิกรโต สงฺคณิการามตํ อนุยุตฺโต, คณาราโม คณรโต คณารามตํ อนุยุตฺโต, เอโก ปวิเวเก อภิรมิสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ ‘เอโก ปวิเวเก อนภิรมนฺโต จิตฺตสฺส นิมิตฺตํ คเหสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ ‘จิตฺตสฺส นิมิตฺตํ อคณฺหนฺโต สมฺมาทิฏฺฐึ ปริปูเรสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ ‘สมฺมาทิฏฺฐึ อปริปูเรตฺวา สมฺมาสมาธึ ปริปูเรสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ ‘สมฺมาสมาธึ อปริปูเรตฺวา สํโยชนานิ ปชหิสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ ‘สํโยชนานิ อปฺปหาย นิพฺพานํ สจฺฉิกริสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
“Bhikkhus, it’s quite impossible that a bhikkhu who enjoys company and groups, who loves them and likes to enjoy them, should take pleasure in being alone in seclusion. Without taking pleasure in being alone in seclusion, it’s impossible to learn the patterns of the mind. Without learning the patterns of the mind, it’s impossible to fulfill right view. Without fulfilling right view, it’s impossible to fulfill right samādhi. Without fulfilling right samādhi, it’s impossible to give up the fetters. Without giving up the fetters, it’s impossible to realize Nibbana.

It’s quite possible that a bhikkhu who doesn’t enjoy company and groups, who doesn’t love them and like to enjoy them, should take pleasure in being alone in seclusion. For someone who takes pleasure in being alone in seclusion, it’s possible to learn the patterns of the mind. For someone who learns the patterns of the mind, it’s possible to fulfill right view. Having fulfilled right view, it’s possible to fulfill right samādhi. Having fulfilled right samādhi, it’s possible to give up the fetters. Having given up the fetters, it’s possible to realize Nibbana.”
