“สทฺโธ จ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ โหติ, โน จ สีลวาฯ เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน อปริปูโร โหติฯ เตน ตํ องฺคํ ปริปูเรตพฺพํ: ‘กินฺตาหํ สทฺโธ จ อสฺสํ สีลวา จา'ติฯ ยโต จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สทฺโธ จ โหติ สีลวา จ, เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน ปริปูโร โหติฯ
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu is faithful but not ethical. So they’re incomplete in that respect, and should fulfill it, thinking: ‘How can I become faithful and ethical?’ When the bhikkhu is faithful and ethical, they’re complete in that respect.
สทฺโธ จ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ โหติ สีลวา จ, โน จ พหุสฺสุโตฯ เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน อปริปูโร โหติฯ เตน ตํ องฺคํ ปริปูเรตพฺพํ: ‘กินฺตาหํ สทฺโธ จ อสฺสํ, สีลวา จ, พหุสฺสุโต จา'ติฯ ยโต จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สทฺโธ จ โหติ สีลวา จ พหุสฺสุโต จ, เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน ปริปูโร โหติฯ
A bhikkhu is faithful and ethical, but not learned. So they’re incomplete in that respect, and should fulfill it, thinking: ‘How can I become faithful, ethical, and learned?’ When the bhikkhu is faithful, ethical, and learned, they’re complete in that respect.

A bhikkhu is faithful, ethical, and learned, but not a Dhamma speaker. … they don’t frequent assemblies … they don’t teach Dhamma to the assembly with assurance … they don’t get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty … they don’t realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. So they’re incomplete in that respect, and should fulfill it, thinking: ‘How can I become faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, one who gets the four jhānas when they want, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements?’
ยโต จ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สทฺโธ จ โหติ, สีลวา จ, พหุสฺสุโต จ, ธมฺมกถิโก จ, ปริสาวจโร จ, วิสารโท จ ปริสาย ธมฺมํ เทเสติ, จตุนฺนญฺจ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภี, อาสวานญฺจ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ; เอวํ โส เตนงฺเคน ปริปูโร โหติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อฏฺฐหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ สมนฺตปาสาทิโก จ โหติ สพฺพาการปริปูโร จา”ติฯ
When they’re faithful, ethical, and learned, a Dhamma speaker, one who frequents assemblies, one who teaches Dhamma to the assembly with assurance, one who gets the four jhānas when they want, and one who lives having realized the ending of defilements, they’re complete in that respect. A bhikkhu who has these eight qualities is inspiring all around, and is complete in every respect.”
