Assemblies
“อฏฺฐิมา, ภิกฺขเว, ปริสาฯ กตมา อฏฺฐ? ขตฺติยปริสา, พฺราหฺมณปริสา, คหปติปริสา, สมณปริสา, จาตุมหาราชิกปริสา, ตาวตึสปริสา, มารปริสา, พฺรหฺมปริสาฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these eight assemblies. What eight? The assemblies of khattiya class persons, brahmins, householders, and ascetics. An assembly of the gods under the Four Great Kings. An assembly of the gods under the Thirty-Three. An assembly of Māras. An assembly of Brahmās.
อภิชานามิ โข ปนาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อเนกสตํ ขตฺติยปริสํ อุปสงฺกมิตาฯ ตตฺรปิ มยา สนฺนิสินฺนปุพฺพญฺเจว สลฺลปิตปุพฺพญฺจ สากจฺฉา จ สมาปนฺนปุพฺพาฯ ตตฺถ ยาทิสโก เตสํ วณฺโณ โหติ ตาทิสโก มยฺหํ วณฺโณ โหติ, ยาทิสโก เตสํ สโร โหติ ตาทิสโก มยฺหํ สโร โหติฯ ธมฺมิยา จ กถาย สนฺทเสฺสมิ สมาทเปมิ สมุตฺเตเชมิ สมฺปหํเสมิฯ ภาสมานญฺจ มํ น ชานนฺติ: ‘โก นุ โข อยํ ภาสติ เทโว วา มนุโสฺส วา'ติฯ ธมฺมิยา กถาย สนฺทเสฺสตฺวา สมาทเปตฺวา สมุตฺเตเชตฺวา สมฺปหํเสตฺวา อนฺตรธายามิฯ อนฺตรหิตญฺจ มํ น ชานนฺติ: ‘โก นุ โข อยํ อนฺตรหิโต เทโว วา มนุโสฺส วา'ติฯ
I recall having approached an assembly of hundreds of khattiya class persons. There I used to sit with them, converse, and engage in discussion. And my appearance and voice became just like theirs. I educated, encouraged, fired up, and inspired them with a Dhamma talk. But when I spoke they didn’t know: ‘Who is this that speaks? Is it a god or a human?’ And when my Dhamma talk was finished I vanished. But when I vanished they didn’t know: ‘Who was that who vanished? Was it a god or a human?’
