ปฐมอาหุเนยฺยสุตฺต
Worthy of Offerings (1st)
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“ฉหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อาหุเนโยฺย โหติ ปาหุเนโยฺย ทกฺขิเณโยฺย อญฺชลิกรณีโย อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ กตเมหิ ฉหิ?
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with six qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What six?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ จกฺขุนา รูปํ ทิสฺวา เนว สุมโน โหติ น ทุมฺมโน, อุเปกฺขโก วิหรติ สโต สมฺปชาโนฯ
It’s a bhikkhu who, when they see a sight with their eyes, is neither happy nor sad. They remain equanimous, mindful and aware.
โสเตน สทฺทํ สุตฺวา …
When they hear a sound with their ears …
ฆาเนน คนฺธํ ฆายิตฺวา …
When they smell an odor with their nose …
ชิวฺหาย รสํ สายิตฺวา …
When they taste a flavor with their tongue …
กาเยน โผฏฺฐพฺพํ ผุสิตฺวา …
When they feel a touch with their body …
มนสา ธมฺมํ วิญฺญาย เนว สุมโน โหติ น ทุมฺมโน, อุเปกฺขโก วิหรติ สโต สมฺปชาโนฯ
When they know a thought with their mind, they’re neither happy nor sad. They remain equanimous, mindful and aware.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ฉหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อาหุเนโยฺย โหติ ปาหุเนโยฺย ทกฺขิเณโยฺย อญฺชลิกรณีโย อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสา”ติฯ
A bhikkhu with these six qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
อิทมโวจ ภควาฯ อตฺตมนา เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ภาสิตํ อภินนฺทุนฺติฯ
That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, the bhikkhus approved what the Buddha said.
