A Master Thief
“တီဟိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အင်္ဂေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော မဟာစောရော သန္ဓိမ္ပိ ဆိန္ဒတိ, နိလ္လောပမ္ပိ ဟရတိ, ဧကာဂါရိကမ္ပိ ကရောတိ, ပရိပန္ထေပိ တိဋ္ဌတိ၊ ကတမေဟိ တီဟိ?
“Bhikkhus, a master thief with three factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery. What three?
ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဝိသမနိဿိတော စ ဟောတိ, ဂဟနနိဿိတော စ ဟောတိ, ဗလဝနိဿိတော စ ဟောတိ၊ ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဝိသမနိဿိတော ဟောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော နဒီဝိဒုဂ္ဂံ ဝါ နိဿိတော ဟောတိ ပဗ္ဗတဝိသမံ ဝါ၊ ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဝိသမနိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊
A master thief relies on uneven ground, on thick cover, and on powerful individuals. And how does a master thief rely on uneven ground? It’s when a master thief relies on inaccessible riverlands or rugged mountains. That’s how a master thief relies on uneven ground.
ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဂဟနနိဿိတော ဟောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော တိဏဂဟနံ ဝါ နိဿိတော ဟောတိ, ရုက္ခဂဟနံ ဝါ ရောဓံ ဝါ မဟာဝနသဏ္ဍံ ဝါ၊ ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဂဟနနိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊
And how does a master thief rely on thick cover? It’s when a master thief relies on thick grass, thick trees, a ridge, or a large dense wood. That’s how a master thief relies on thick cover.
ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဗလဝနိဿိတော ဟောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ရာဇာနံ ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာနံ ဝါ နိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊ တဿ ဧဝံ ဟောတိ: ‘သစေ မံ ကောစိ ကိဉ္စိ ဝက္ခတိ, ဣမေ မေ ရာဇာနော ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာ ဝါ ပရိယောဓာယ အတ္ထံ ဘဏိဿန္တီ'တိ၊ သစေ နံ ကောစိ ကိဉ္စိ အာဟ, တျာဿ ရာဇာနော ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာ ဝါ ပရိယောဓာယ အတ္ထံ ဘဏန္တိ၊ ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မဟာစောရော ဗလဝနိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊
And how does a master thief rely on powerful individuals? It’s when a master thief relies on rulers or their ministers. They think: ‘If anyone accuses me of anything, these rulers or their ministers will speak in my defense in the case.’ And that’s exactly what happens. That’s how a master thief relies on powerful individuals.
ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တီဟိ အင်္ဂေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော မဟာစောရော သန္ဓိမ္ပိ ဆိန္ဒတိ, နိလ္လောပမ္ပိ ဟရတိ, ဧကာဂါရိကမ္ပိ ကရောတိ, ပရိပန္ထေပိ တိဋ္ဌတိ၊
A master thief with these three factors breaks into houses, plunders wealth, steals from isolated buildings, and commits highway robbery.
ဧဝမေဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တီဟိ အင်္ဂေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော ပါပဘိက္ခု ခတံ ဥပဟတံ အတ္တာနံ ပရိဟရတိ, သာဝဇ္ဇော စ ဟောတိ သာနုဝဇ္ဇော စ ဝိညူနံ, ဗဟုဉ္စ အပုညံ ပသဝတိ၊ ကတမေဟိ တီဟိ?
In the same way, when a bad bhikkhu has three factors, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much bad karma. What three?
ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဝိသမနိဿိတော စ ဟောတိ ဂဟနနိဿိတော စ ဗလဝနိဿိတော စ၊
A bad bhikkhu relies on uneven ground, on thick cover, and on powerful individuals.
ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဝိသမနိဿိတော ဟောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဝိသမေန ကာယကမ္မေန သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ, ဝိသမေန ဝစီကမ္မေန သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ, ဝိသမေန မနောကမ္မေန သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ၊ ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဝိသမနိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊
And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on uneven ground? It’s when a bad bhikkhu has unethical conduct by way of body, speech, and mind. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on uneven ground.
ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဂဟနနိဿိတော ဟောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု မိစ္ဆာဒိဋ္ဌိကော ဟောတိ, အန္တဂ္ဂါဟိကာယ ဒိဋ္ဌိယာ သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ၊ ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဂဟနနိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊
And how does a bad bhikkhu rely on thick cover? It’s when a bad bhikkhu has wrong view, he’s attached to an extremist view. That’s how a bad bhikkhu relies on thick cover.
ကထဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဗလဝနိဿိတော ဟောတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ရာဇာနံ ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာနံ ဝါ နိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊ တဿ ဧဝံ ဟောတိ: ‘သစေ မံ ကောစိ ကိဉ္စိ ဝက္ခတိ, ဣမေ မေ ရာဇာနော ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာ ဝါ ပရိယောဓာယ အတ္ထံ ဘဏိဿန္တီ'တိ၊ သစေ နံ ကောစိ ကိဉ္စိ အာဟ, တျာဿ ရာဇာနော ဝါ ရာဇမဟာမတ္တာ ဝါ ပရိယောဓာယ အတ္ထံ ဘဏန္တိ၊ ဧဝံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါပဘိက္ခု ဗလဝနိဿိတော ဟောတိ၊

When a bad bhikkhu has these three qualities, they keep themselves broken and damaged. They deserve to be blamed and criticized by sensible people, and they make much bad karma.”
