කෝසලසුත්ත
The King of Kosala
ඒකං සමයං භගවා සාවත්ථියං විහරති ජේතවනේ අනාථපිණ්ඩිකස්ස ආරාමේ. අථ ඛෝ රාජා පසේනදි කෝසලෝ යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං අභිවාදේත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Then King Pasenadi of Kosala went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side.
තේන ඛෝ පන සමයේන මල්ලිකා දේවී කාලඞ්කතා හෝති. අථ ඛෝ අඤ්ඤතරෝ පුරිසෝ යේන රාජා පසේනදි කෝසලෝ තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා රඤ්ඤෝ පසේනදිස්ස කෝසලස්ස උපකණ්ණකේ ආරෝචේති: “මල්ලිකා දේවී, දේව, කාලඞ්කතා”ති.
Then a man went up to the king and whispered in his ear, “Your Majesty, Queen Mallikā has passed away.”
ඒවං වුත්තේ, රාජා පසේනදි කෝසලෝ දුක්ඛී දුම්මනෝ පත්තක්ඛන්ධෝ අධෝමුඛෝ පජ්ඣායන්තෝ අප්පටිභානෝ නිසීදි.
When this was said, King Pasenadi was miserable and sad. He sat with his shoulders drooping, downcast, depressed, with nothing to say.
අථ ඛෝ භගවා රාජානං පසේනදිං කෝසලං දුක්ඛිං දුම්මනං පත්තක්ඛන්ධං අධෝමුඛං පජ්ඣායන්තං අප්පටිභානං විදිත්වා රාජානං පසේනදිං කෝසලං ඒතදවෝච: “පඤ්චිමානි, මහාරාජ, අලබ්භනීයානි ඨානානි සමණේන වා බ්රාහ්මණේන වා දේවේන වා මාරේන වා බ්රහ්මුනා වා කේනචි වා ලෝකස්මිං. කතමානි පඤ්ච? ‘ජරාධම්මං මා ජීරී(අ)ති අලබ්භනීයං ඨානං …පේ… න සෝචනාය පරිදේවනාය …පේ… කම්මං දළ්හං කින්ති කරෝමි දානී”ති.
Knowing this, the Buddha said to him, “Great king, there are five things that cannot be had by any ascetic or brahmin or god or Māra or Brahmā or by anyone in the world. What five? That someone liable to old age should not grow old. … Sorrowing and lamenting doesn’t do even a little bit of good … ‘The karma is strong. What can I do now?’”
