Quick-witted
อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เยนายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา อายสฺมตา สาริปุตฺเตน สทฺธึ สมฺโมทิฯ สมฺโมทนียํ กถํ สารณียํ วีติสาเรตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท อายสฺมนฺตํ สาริปุตฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to him:
“กิตฺตาวตา นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ ขิปฺปนิสนฺติ จ โหติ, กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ สุคฺคหิตคฺคาหี จ, พหุญฺจ คณฺหาติ, คหิตญฺจสฺส นปฺปมุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Friend Sāriputta, how are we to define a bhikkhu who is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings, who learns well, learns much, and does not forget what they’ve learned?”
“อายสฺมา โข อานนฺโท พหุสฺสุโตฯ ปฏิภาตุ อายสฺมนฺตํเยว อานนฺทนฺ”ติฯ
“Well, Venerable Ānanda, you’re very learned. Why don’t you clarify this yourself?”
“เตนหาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, สุณาหิ, สาธุกํ มนสิ กโรหิ; ภาสิสฺสามี”ติฯ
“Well then, Friend Sāriputta, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“เอวมาวุโส”ติ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต อายสฺมโต อานนฺทสฺส ปจฺจโสฺสสิฯ อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เอตทโวจ:
“Yes, friend,” Sāriputta replied. Venerable Ānanda said this:
“อิธาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ อตฺถกุสโล จ โหติ, ธมฺมกุสโล จ, พฺยญฺชนกุสโล จ, นิรุตฺติกุสโล จ, ปุพฺพาปรกุสโล จฯ เอตฺตาวตา โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ภิกฺขุ ขิปฺปนิสนฺติ จ โหติ กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุ, สุคฺคหิตคฺคาหี จ, พหุญฺจ คณฺหาติ, คหิตญฺจสฺส นปฺปมุสฺสตี”ติฯ
“It’s when a bhikkhu is skilled in the meaning, skilled in the teaching, skilled in terminology, skilled in phrasing, and skilled in sequence. That is how to define a bhikkhu who is quick-witted when it comes to skillful teachings, who learns well, learns much, and does not forget what they’ve learned.”
“อจฺฉริยํ, อาวุโส, อพฺภุตํ, อาวุโสฯ ยาว สุภาสิตญฺจิทํ อายสฺมตา อานนฺเทนฯ อิเมหิ จ มยํ ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคตํ อายสฺมนฺตํ อานนฺทํ ธาเรม: ‘อายสฺมา อานนฺโท อตฺถกุสโล ธมฺมกุสโล พฺยญฺชนกุสโล นิรุตฺติกุสโล ปุพฺพาปรกุสโล'”ติฯ
“It’s incredible, it’s amazing! How well this was said by Venerable Ānanda! And we will remember Venerable Ānanda as someone who has these five qualities: ‘Friend Ānanda is skilled in the meaning, skilled in the teaching, skilled in terminology, skilled in phrasing, and skilled in sequence.’”
