A Meal Designator
“จตูหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภตฺตุทฺเทสโก ยถาภตํ นิกฺขิตฺโต เอวํ นิรเยฯ กตเมหิ จตูหิ? ฉนฺทาคตึ คจฺฉติ, โทสาคตึ คจฺฉติ, โมหาคตึ คจฺฉติ, ภยาคตึ คจฺฉติ—อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตูหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภตฺตุทฺเทสโก ยถาภตํ นิกฺขิตฺโต เอวํ นิรเยฯ
“Bhikkhus, a meal designator who has four qualities is cast down to hell. What four? They make decisions prejudiced by favoritism, hostility, stupidity, and cowardice. A meal designator who has these four qualities is cast down to hell.
จตูหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภตฺตุทฺเทสโก ยถาภตํ นิกฺขิตฺโต เอวํ สคฺเคฯ กตเมหิ จตูหิ? น ฉนฺทาคตึ คจฺฉติ, น โทสาคตึ คจฺฉติ, น โมหาคตึ คจฺฉติ, น ภยาคตึ คจฺฉติ—อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตูหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภตฺตุทฺเทสโก ยถาภตํ นิกฺขิตฺโต เอวํ สคฺเคติฯ
A meal designator who has four qualities is raised up to heaven. What four? They make decisions unprejudiced by favoritism, hostility, stupidity, and cowardice. A meal designator who has these four qualities is raised up to heaven.
เย เกจิ กาเมสุ อสญฺญตา ชนา, อธมฺมิกา โหนฺติ อธมฺมคารวา; ฉนฺทา โทสา โมหา จ ภยา คามิโน, ปริสากสโฏ จ ปเนส วุจฺจติฯ
All those people with unbridled sensuality, unprincipled, with no respect for principle, led astray by favoritism, hatred,
stupidity, or cowardice, are called ‘an assembly of the dregs’:
เอวญฺหิ วุตฺตํ สมเณน ชานตา, ตสฺมา หิ เต สปฺปุริสา ปสํสิยา; ธมฺเม ฐิตา เย น กโรนฺติ ปาปกํ, น ฉนฺทา น โทสา น โมหา น ภยา จ คามิโน; ปริสาย มณฺโฑ จ ปเนส วุจฺจติ, เอวญฺหิ วุตฺตํ สมเณน ชานตา”ติฯ
