Effort
“จตฺตาริมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, สมฺมปฺปธานานิฯ กตมานิ จตฺตาริ?
“Bhikkhus, there are these four right efforts. What four?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อนุปฺปนฺนานํ ปาปกานํ อกุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ อนุปฺปาทาย ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติ;
A bhikkhu generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise.
อุปฺปนฺนานํ ปาปกานํ อกุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ ปหานาย ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติ;
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up.
อนุปฺปนฺนานํ กุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ อุปฺปาทาย ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติ;
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities arise.
อุปฺปนฺนานํ กุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ ฐิติยา อสมฺโมสาย ภิโยฺยภาวาย เวปุลฺลาย ภาวนาย ปาริปูริยา ฉนฺทํ ชเนติ วายมติ วีริยํ อารภติ จิตฺตํ ปคฺคณฺหาติ ปทหติฯ
They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fulfilled by development.
อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาริ สมฺมปฺปธานานีติฯ
These are the four right efforts.
สมฺมปฺปธานา มารเธยฺยาภิภูตา, เต อสิตา ชาติมรณภยสฺส ปารคู; เต ตุสิตา เชตฺวา มารํ สวาหินึ เต อเนชา, สพฺพํ นมุจิพลํ อุปาติวตฺตา เต สุขิตา”ติฯ
By rightly striving,
they’ve crushed Māra’s sovereignty; unattached, they’ve gone beyondthe peril of birth and death. Contented and unstirred,they’ve vanquished Māra and his mount; now they’ve gone beyond all Namuci’s forces,they’re happy.”
