Regarded as Foremost
“จตโสฺส อิมา, ภิกฺขเว, อคฺคปญฺญตฺติโยฯ กตมา จตโสฺส? เอตทคฺคํ, ภิกฺขเว, อตฺตภาวีนํ ยทิทํ—ราหุ อสุรินฺโทฯ เอตทคฺคํ, ภิกฺขเว, กามโภคีนํ ยทิทํ—ราชา มนฺธาตาฯ เอตทคฺคํ, ภิกฺขเว, อาธิปเตยฺยานํ ยทิทํ—มาโร ปาปิมาฯ สเทวเก, ภิกฺขเว, โลเก สมารเก สพฺรหฺมเก สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย ตถาคโต อคฺคมกฺขายติ อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธฯ อิมา โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตโสฺส อคฺคปญฺญตฺติโยติฯ
“Bhikkhus, these four are regarded as foremost. What four? The foremost in size of life-form is Rāhu, lord of demons. The foremost pleasure seeker is King Mandhātā. The foremost in sovereignty is Māra the Wicked. In this world—with its gods, Māras and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humans—a Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha is said to be the best. These are the four regarded as foremost.
ราหุคฺคํ อตฺตภาวีนํ, มนฺธาตา กามโภคินํ; มาโร อาธิปเตยฺยานํ, อิทฺธิยา ยสสา ชลํฯ
Rāhu is foremost in size of life-form, Mandhātā in enjoying sensual pleasures, Māra in sovereignty, shining with power and glory.
อุทฺธํ ติริยํ อปาจีนํ, ยาวตาชคโตคติ; สเทวกสฺส โลกสฺส, พุทฺโธ อคฺโค ปวุจฺจตี”ติฯ
Above, below, all round, as far as the earth extends; in all the world with its gods, the Buddha is declared foremost.”
