Aspiration
“สทฺโธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ เอวํ สมฺมา อายาจมาโน อายาเจยฺย: ‘ตาทิโส โหมิ ยาทิสา สาริปุตฺตโมคฺคลฺลานา'ติฯ เอสา, ภิกฺขเว, ตุลา เอตํ ปมาณํ มม สาวกานํ ภิกฺขูนํ, ยทิทํ สาริปุตฺตโมคฺคลฺลานาฯ
“Bhikkhus, a faithful monk would rightly aspire: ‘May I be like Sāriputta and Moggallāna!’ These are a standard and a measure for my monk disciples, that is, Sāriputta and Moggallāna.
สทฺธา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุนี เอวํ สมฺมา อายาจมานา อายาเจยฺย: ‘ตาทิสา โหมิ ยาทิสา เขมา จ ภิกฺขุนี อุปฺปลวณฺณา จา'ติฯ เอสา, ภิกฺขเว, ตุลา เอตํ ปมาณํ มม สาวิกานํ ภิกฺขุนีนํ, ยทิทํ เขมา จ ภิกฺขุนี อุปฺปลวณฺณา จฯ
A faithful nun would rightly aspire: ‘May I be like the nuns Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā!’ These are a standard and a measure for my nun disciples, that is, the nuns Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā.
สทฺโธ, ภิกฺขเว, อุปาสโก เอวํ สมฺมา อายาจมาโน อายาเจยฺย: ‘ตาทิโส โหมิ ยาทิโส จิตฺโต จ คหปติ หตฺถโก จ อาฬวโก'ติฯ เอสา, ภิกฺขเว, ตุลา เอตํ ปมาณํ มม สาวกานํ อุปาสกานํ, ยทิทํ จิตฺโต จ คหปติ หตฺถโก จ อาฬวโกฯ
A faithful layman would rightly aspire: ‘May I be like the householder Citta and Hatthaka of Ãḷavī!’ These are a standard and a measure for my male lay disciples, that is, the householder Citta and Hatthaka of Ãḷavī.
สทฺธา, ภิกฺขเว, อุปาสิกา เอวํ สมฺมา อายาจมานา อายาเจยฺย: ‘ตาทิสา โหมิ ยาทิสา ขุชฺชุตฺตรา จ อุปาสิกา เวฬุกณฺฑกิยา จ นนฺทมาตา'ติฯ เอสา, ภิกฺขเว, ตุลา เอตํ ปมาณํ มม สาวิกานํ อุปาสิกานํ, ยทิทํ ขุชฺชุตฺตรา จ อุปาสิกา เวฬุกณฺฑกิยา จ นนฺทมาตา”ติฯ
A faithful laywoman would rightly aspire: ‘May I be like the laywomen Khujjuttarā and Veḷukaṇṭakī, Nanda’s mother!’ These are a standard and a measure for my female lay disciples, that is, the laywomen Khujjuttarā and Veḷukaṇṭakī, Nanda’s mother.”
