The Chamberlains
သာဝတ္ထိနိဒါနံ၊ တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန သမ္ဗဟုလာ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝတော စီဝရကမ္မံ ကရောန္တိ: “နိဋ္ဌိတစီဝရော ဘဂဝါ တေမာသစ္စယေန စာရိကံ ပက္ကမိဿတီ”တိ၊ တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော သာဓုကေ ပဋိဝသန္တိ ကေနစိဒေဝ ကရဏီယေန၊ အဿောသုံ ခေါ ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော: “သမ္ဗဟုလာ ကိရ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝတော စီဝရကမ္မံ ကရောန္တိ: ‘နိဋ္ဌိတစီဝရော ဘဂဝါ တေမာသစ္စယေန စာရိကံ ပက္ကမိဿတီ'”တိ၊
At Sāvatthī. At that time several bhikkhus were making a robe for the Buddha, thinking that when his robe was finished and the three months of the rains residence had passed the Buddha would set out wandering. Now at that time the chamberlains Isidatta and Purāṇa were residing in Sādhuka on some business. They heard about this.
အထ ခေါ ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော မဂ္ဂေ ပုရိသံ ဌပေသုံ:
So they posted someone on the road, saying:
“ယဒါ တွံ, အမ္ဘော ပုရိသ, ပဿေယျာသိ ဘဂဝန္တံ အာဂစ္ဆန္တံ အရဟန္တံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓံ, အထ အမှာကံ အာရောစေယျာသီ”တိ၊ ဒွီဟတီဟံ ဌိတော ခေါ သော ပုရိသော အဒ္ဒသ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဒူရတောဝ အာဂစ္ဆန္တံ၊ ဒိသွာန ယေန ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏေ ထပတယော ဧတဒဝေါစ:
“My good man, let us know when you see the Blessed One coming, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha.” And that person stood there for two or three days before they saw the Buddha coming off in the distance. When they saw him, they went to the chamberlains and said:
“အယံ သော, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ အာဂစ္ဆတိ အရဟံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ၊ ယဿဒါနိ ကာလံ မညထာ”တိ၊
“Sirs, the Blessed One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha is coming. Please come at your convenience.”
အထ ခေါ ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိံသု; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ပိဋ္ဌိတော ပိဋ္ဌိတော အနုဗန္ဓိံသု၊ အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ မဂ္ဂါ ဩက္ကမ္မ ယေန အညတရံ ရုက္ခမူလံ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ပညတ္တေ အာသနေ နိသီဒိ၊ ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိံသု၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နာ ခေါ တေ ဣသိဒတ္တပုရာဏာ ထပတယော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစုံ:
Then the chamberlains went up to the Buddha, bowed, and followed behind him. And then the Buddha left the road, went to the root of a certain tree, and sat down on the seat spread out. The chamberlains Isidatta and Purāṇa bowed, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
“ယဒါ မယံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံ သုဏာမ: ‘သာဝတ္ထိယာ ကောသလေသု စာရိကံ ပက္ကမိဿတီ'တိ, ဟောတိ နော တသ္မိံ သမယေ အနတ္တမနတာ ဟောတိ ဒေါမနဿံ: ‘ဒူရေ နော ဘဂဝါ ဘဝိဿတီ'တိ၊ ယဒါ ပန မယံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံ သုဏာမ: ‘သာဝတ္ထိယာ ကောသလေသု စာရိကံ ပက္ကန္တော'တိ, ဟောတိ နော တသ္မိံ သမယေ အနတ္တမနတာ ဟောတိ ဒေါမနဿံ: ‘ဒူရေ နော ဘဂဝါ'တိ၊
“Sir, when we hear that you will be setting out from Sāvatthī to wander in the Kosalan lands, we’re sad and upset, thinking that you will be far from us. And when we hear that you are setting out from Sāvatthī to wander in the Kosalan lands, we’re sad and upset, thinking that you are far from us.
ယဒါ ပန မယံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံ သုဏာမ: ‘ကောသလေဟိ မလ္လေသု စာရိကံ ပက္ကမိဿတီ'တိ, ဟောတိ နော တသ္မိံ သမယေ အနတ္တမနတာ ဟောတိ ဒေါမနဿံ: ‘ဒူရေ နော ဘဂဝါ ဘဝိဿတီ'တိ၊ ယဒါ ပန မယံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံ သုဏာမ: ‘ကောသလေဟိ မလ္လေသု စာရိကံ ပက္ကန္တော'တိ, ဟောတိ နော တသ္မိံ သမယေ အနတ္တမနတာ ဟောတိ ဒေါမနဿံ: ‘ဒူရေ နော ဘဂဝါ'တိ၊
And when we hear that you will be setting out from the Kosalan lands to wander in the Mallian lands, we’re sad and upset, thinking that you will be far from us. And when we hear that you are setting out from the Kosalan lands to wander in the Mallian lands, we’re sad and upset, thinking that you are far from us.

you will be setting out in the Kosalan lands to wander to Sāvatthī, we’re happy and joyful, thinking that you will be near to us.
ယဒါ ပန မယံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံ သုဏာမ: ‘သာဝတ္ထိယံ ဝိဟရတိ ဇေတဝနေ အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကဿ အာရာမေ'တိ, ဟောတိ အနပ္ပကာ နော တသ္မိံ သမယေ အတ္တမနတာ ဟောတိ အနပ္ပကံ သောမနဿံ: ‘အာသန္နေ နော ဘဂဝါ'”တိ၊
And when we hear that you are staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery we have no little happiness and joy, thinking that you are near to us.”
“တသ္မာတိဟ, ထပတယော, သမ္ဗာဓော ဃရာဝါသော ရဇာပထော, အဗ္ဘောကာသော ပဗ္ဗဇ္ဇာ၊ အလဉ္စ ပန ဝေါ, ထပတယော, အပ္ပမာဒါယာ”တိ၊
“Well then, chamberlains, living in a house is cramped and dirty, but the life of one gone forth is wide open. Just this much is enough to be diligent.”
“အတ္ထိ ခေါ နော, ဘန္တေ, ဧတမှာ သမ္ဗာဓာ အညော သမ္ဗာဓော သမ္ဗာဓတရော စေဝ သမ္ဗာဓသင်္ခါတတရော စာ”တိ၊
“Sir, for us there is something that’s even more cramped than that, and is considered as such.”
“ကတမော ပန ဝေါ, ထပတယော, ဧတမှာ သမ္ဗာဓာ အညော သမ္ဗာဓော သမ္ဗာဓတရော စေဝ သမ္ဗာဓသင်္ခါတတရော စာ”တိ?
“What is that?”
“ဣဓ မယံ, ဘန္တေ, ယဒါ ရာဇာ ပသေနဒိ ကောသလော ဥယျာနဘူမိံ နိယျာတုကာမော ဟောတိ, ယေ တေ ရညော ပသေနဒိဿ ကောသလဿ နာဂါ ဩပဝယှာ တေ ကပ္ပေတွာ, ယာ တာ ရညော ပသေနဒိဿ ကောသလဿ ပဇာပတိယော ပိယာ မနာပါ တာ ဧကံ ပုရတော ဧကံ ပစ္ဆတော နိသီဒါပေမ၊ တာသံ ခေါ ပန, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂိနီနံ ဧဝရူပေါ ဂန္ဓော ဟောတိ, သေယျထာပိ နာမ ဂန္ဓကရဏ္ဍကဿ တာဝဒေဝ ဝိဝရိယမာနဿ, ယထာ တံ ရာဇကညာနံ ဂန္ဓေန ဝိဘူသိတာနံ၊ တာသံ ခေါ ပန, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂိနီနံ ဧဝရူပေါ ကာယသမ္ဖဿော ဟောတိ, သေယျထာပိ နာမ တူလပိစုနော ဝါ ကပ္ပါသပိစုနော ဝါ, ယထာ တံ ရာဇကညာနံ သုခေဓိတာနံ၊ တသ္မိံ ခေါ ပန, ဘန္တေ, သမယေ နာဂေါပိ ရက္ခိတဗ္ဗော ဟောတိ, တာပိ ဘဂိနိယော ရက္ခိတဗ္ဗာ ဟောန္တိ, အတ္တာပိ ရက္ခိတဗ္ဗော ဟောတိ၊ န ခေါ ပန မယံ, ဘန္တေ, အဘိဇာနာမ တာသု ဘဂိနီသု ပါပကံ စိတ္တံ ဥပ္ပါဒေတာ၊ အယံ ခေါ နော, ဘန္တေ, ဧတမှာ သမ္ဗာဓာ အညော သမ္ဗာဓော သမ္ဗာဓတရော စေဝ သမ္ဗာဓသင်္ခါတတရော စာ”တိ၊
“Sir, it’s when King Pasenadi of Kosala wants to go and visit a park. We have to harness and prepare his royal elephants. Then we have to seat his dear and beloved wives on the elephants, one in front of us, and one behind. Those sisters smell like a freshly opened perfume box; that’s how the royal ladies smell with makeup on. The touch of those sisters is like a tuft of cotton-wool or kapok; that’s how dainty the royal ladies are. Now at that time we must look after the elephants, the sisters, and ourselves. But we don’t recall having a bad thought regarding those sisters. This is that thing that’s even more cramped than that, and is considered as such.”
“တသ္မာတိဟ, ထပတယော, သမ္ဗာဓော ဃရာဝါသော ရဇာပထော, အဗ္ဘောကာသော ပဗ္ဗဇ္ဇာ၊ အလဉ္စ ပန ဝေါ, ထပတယော, အပ္ပမာဒါယ၊ စတူဟိ ခေါ, ထပတယော, ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော အရိယသာဝကော သောတာပန္နော ဟောတိ အဝိနိပါတဓမ္မော နိယတော သမ္ဗောဓိပရာယဏော၊
“Well then, chamberlains, living in a house is cramped and dirty, but the life of one gone forth is wide open. Just this much is enough to be diligent. A noble disciple who has four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.
ကတမေဟိ စတူဟိ? ဣဓ, ထပတယော, အရိယသာဝကော ဗုဒ္ဓေ အဝေစ္စပ္ပသာဒေန သမန္နာဂတော ဟောတိ—ဣတိပိ သော ဘဂဝါ …ပေ… သတ္ထာ ဒေဝမနုဿာနံ ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဘဂဝါတိ၊ ဓမ္မေ …ပေ… သင်္ဃေ …ပေ… ဝိဂတမလမစ္ဆေရေန စေတသာ အဇ္ဈာဂါရံ ဝသတိ မုတ္တစာဂေါ ပယတပါဏိ ဝေါဿဂ္ဂရတော ယာစယောဂေါ ဒါနသံဝိဘာဂရတော၊ ဣမေဟိ ခေါ, ထပတယော, စတူဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော အရိယသာဝကော သောတာပန္နော ဟောတိ အဝိနိပါတဓမ္မော နိယတော သမ္ဗောဓိပရာယဏော၊
What four? It’s when a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … They live at home rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, loving to let go, committed to charity, loving to give and to share. A noble disciple who has these four things is a stream-enterer, not liable to be reborn in the underworld, bound for awakening.
တုမှေ ခေါ, ထပတယော, ဗုဒ္ဓေ အဝေစ္စပ္ပသာဒေန သမန္နာဂတာ—ဣတိပိ သော ဘဂဝါ …ပေ… သတ္ထာ ဒေဝမနုဿာနံ ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဘဂဝါတိ၊ ဓမ္မေ …ပေ… သင်္ဃေ …ပေ… ယံ ခေါ ပန ကိဉ္စိ ကုလေ ဒေယျဓမ္မံ သဗ္ဗံ တံ အပ္ပဋိဝိဘတ္တံ သီလဝန္တေဟိ ကလျာဏဓမ္မေဟိ၊
And you have experiential confidence in the Buddha … the teaching … the Saṅgha … And whatever there is in your family that’s available to give, you share it all with those who are ethical, of good character.
တံ ကိံ မညထ, ထပတယော, ကတိဝိဓာ တေ ကောသလေသု မနုဿာ ယေ တုမှာကံ သမသမာ, ယဒိဒံ—ဒါနသံဝိဘာဂေ”တိ?
What do you think, chamberlains? How many people among the Kosalans are your equal when it comes to giving and sharing?”
“လာဘာ နော, ဘန္တေ, သုလဒ္ဓံ နော, ဘန္တေ၊ ယေသံ နော ဘဂဝါ ဧဝံ ပဇာနာတီ”တိ၊
“We’re fortunate, sir, so very fortunate, in that the Buddha understands us like this.”
