Advice (3rd)
ရာဇဂဟေ ကလန္ဒကနိဝါပေ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာကဿပေါ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နံ ခေါ အာယသ္မန္တံ မဟာကဿပံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Near Rājagaha, in the squirrels’ feeding ground. Then Venerable Mahākassapa went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“ဩဝဒ, ကဿပ, ဘိက္ခူ; ကရောဟိ, ကဿပ, ဘိက္ခူနံ ဓမ္မိံ ကထံ၊ အဟံ ဝါ, ကဿပ, ဘိက္ခူနံ ဩဝဒေယျံ တွံ ဝါ; အဟံ ဝါ ဘိက္ခူနံ ဓမ္မိံ ကထံ ကရေယျံ တွံ ဝါ”တိ၊
“Kassapa, advise the bhikkhus! Give them a Dhamma talk! Either you or I should advise the bhikkhus and give them a Dhamma talk.”
“ဒုဗ္ဗစာ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဧတရဟိ ဘိက္ခူ, ဒေါဝစဿကရဏေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတာ, အက္ခမာ, အပ္ပဒက္ခိဏဂ္ဂါဟိနော အနုသာသနိန်”တိ၊
“Sir, the bhikkhus these days are hard to admonish, having qualities that make them hard to admonish. They’re impatient, and don’t take instruction respectfully.”
“တထာ ဟိ ပန, ကဿပ, ပုဗ္ဗေ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ အာရညိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, ပံသုကူလိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ ပံသုကူလိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, တေစီဝရိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ တေစီဝရိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, အပ္ပိစ္ဆာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ အပ္ပိစ္ဆတာယ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, သန္တုဋ္ဌာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ သန္တုဋ္ဌိယာ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, ပဝိဝိတ္တာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ ပဝိဝေကဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, အသံသဋ္ဌာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ အသံသဂ္ဂဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော၊
“Kassapa, that’s because formerly the senior bhikkhus lived in the wilderness, ate only almsfood, wore rag robes, and owned just three robes; and they praised these things. They were of few wishes, content, secluded, aloof, and energetic; and they praised these things.
တတြ ယော ဟောတိ ဘိက္ခု အာရညိကော စေဝ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကော စေဝ ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပံသုကူလိကော စေဝ ပံသုကူလိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, တေစီဝရိကော စေဝ တေစီဝရိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, အပ္ပိစ္ဆော စေဝ အပ္ပိစ္ဆတာယ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, သန္တုဋ္ဌော စေဝ သန္တုဋ္ဌိယာ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပဝိဝိတ္တော စေဝ ပဝိဝေကဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, အသံသဋ္ဌော စေဝ အသံသဂ္ဂဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော စေဝ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, တံ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ အာသနေန နိမန္တေန္တိ: ‘ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ကော နာမာယံ ဘိက္ခု, ဘဒ္ဒကော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု, သိက္ခာကာမော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု; ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ဣဒံ အာသနံ နိသီဒါဟီ'တိ၊
The senior bhikkhus invite such a bhikkhu to a seat, saying: ‘Welcome, bhikkhu! What is this bhikkhu’s name? This bhikkhu is good-natured; he really wants to train. Please, bhikkhu, take a seat.’
တတြ, ကဿပ, နဝါနံ ဘိက္ခူနံ ဧဝံ ဟောတိ: ‘ယော ကိရ သော ဟောတိ ဘိက္ခု အာရညိကော စေဝ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကော စေဝ …ပေ… ပံသုကူလိကော စေဝ … တေစီဝရိကော စေဝ … အပ္ပိစ္ဆော စေဝ … သန္တုဋ္ဌော စေဝ … ပဝိဝိတ္တော စေဝ … အသံသဋ္ဌော စေဝ … အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော စေဝ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, တံ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ အာသနေန နိမန္တေန္တိ—ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ကော နာမာယံ ဘိက္ခု, ဘဒ္ဒကော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု, သိက္ခာကာမော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု; ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ဣဒံ အာသနံ နိသီဒါဟီ'တိ၊ တေ တထတ္တာယ ပဋိပဇ္ဇန္တိ; တေသံ တံ ဟောတိ ဒီဃရတ္တံ ဟိတာယ သုခါယ၊
Then the junior bhikkhus think: ‘It seems that when a bhikkhu lives in the wilderness … and is energetic, and praises these things, senior bhikkhus invite them to a seat …’ They practice accordingly. That is for their lasting welfare and happiness.
ဧတရဟိ ပန, ကဿပ, ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ န စေဝ အာရညိကာ န စ အာရညိကတ္တဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကာ န စ ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကတ္တဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ ပံသုကူလိကာ န စ ပံသုကူလိကတ္တဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ တေစီဝရိကာ န စ တေစီဝရိကတ္တဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ အပ္ပိစ္ဆာ န စ အပ္ပိစ္ဆတာယ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ သန္တုဋ္ဌာ န စ သန္တုဋ္ဌိယာ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ ပဝိဝိတ္တာ န စ ပဝိဝေကဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ အသံသဋ္ဌာ န စ အသံသဂ္ဂဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော, န စေဝ အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယာ န စ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော၊
But these days, Kassapa, the senior bhikkhus don’t live in the wilderness … and aren’t energetic; and they don’t praise these things.
တတြ ယော ဟောတိ ဘိက္ခု ဉာတော ယသဿီ လာဘီ စီဝရပိဏ္ဍပါတသေနာသနဂိလာနပ္ပစ္စယဘေသဇ္ဇပရိက္ခာရာနံ တံ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ အာသနေန နိမန္တေန္တိ: ‘ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ကော နာမာယံ ဘိက္ခု, ဘဒ္ဒကော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု, သဗြဟ္မစာရိကာမော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု; ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ဣဒံ အာသနံ နိသီဒါဟီ'တိ၊
When a bhikkhu is well-known and famous, a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick, senior bhikkhus invite them to a seat: ‘Welcome, bhikkhu! What is this bhikkhu’s name? This bhikkhu is good-natured; he really likes his fellow monks. Please, bhikkhu, take a seat.’
တတြ, ကဿပ, နဝါနံ ဘိက္ခူနံ ဧဝံ ဟောတိ: ‘ယော ကိရ သော ဟောတိ ဘိက္ခု ဉာတော ယသဿီ လာဘီ စီဝရပိဏ္ဍပါတသေနာသနဂိလာနပ္ပစ္စယဘေသဇ္ဇပရိက္ခာရာနံ တံ ထေရာ ဘိက္ခူ အာသနေန နိမန္တေန္တိ—ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ကော နာမာယံ ဘိက္ခု, ဘဒ္ဒကော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု, သဗြဟ္မစာရိကာမော ဝတာယံ ဘိက္ခု; ဧဟိ, ဘိက္ခု, ဣဒံ အာသနံ နိသီဒါဟီ'တိ၊ တေ တထတ္တာယ ပဋိပဇ္ဇန္တိ၊ တေသံ တံ ဟောတိ ဒီဃရတ္တံ အဟိတာယ ဒုက္ခာယ၊ ယဉှိ တံ, ကဿပ, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ: ‘ဥပဒ္ဒုတာ ဗြဟ္မစာရီ ဗြဟ္မစာရူပဒ္ဒဝေန အဘိပတ္ထနာ ဗြဟ္မစာရီ ဗြဟ္မစာရိအဘိပတ္ထနေနာ'တိ, ဧတရဟိ တံ, ကဿပ, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ: ‘ဥပဒ္ဒုတာ ဗြဟ္မစာရီ ဗြဟ္မစာရူပဒ္ဒဝေန အဘိပတ္ထနာ ဗြဟ္မစာရီ ဗြဟ္မစာရိအဘိပတ္ထနေနာ'”တိ၊
Then the junior bhikkhus think: ‘It seems that when a bhikkhu is well-known and famous, a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick, senior bhikkhus invite them to a seat …’ They practice accordingly. That is for their lasting harm and suffering. And if it could ever be rightly said that spiritual practitioners are imperiled by the peril of a spiritual practitioner, and vanquished by the vanquishing of a spiritual practitioner, it is these days that this could be rightly said.”
