Old Age
ဧဝံ မေ သုတံ … ရာဇဂဟေ ဝေဠုဝနေ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ မဟာကဿပေါ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နံ ခေါ အာယသ္မန္တံ မဟာကဿပံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
So I have heard. Near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove. Then Venerable Mahākassapa went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“ဇိဏ္ဏောသိ ဒါနိ တွံ, ကဿပ, ဂရုကာနိ စ တေ ဣမာနိ သာဏာနိ ပံသုကူလာနိ နိဗ္ဗသနာနိ၊ တသ္မာတိဟ တွံ, ကဿပ, ဂဟပတာနိ စေဝ စီဝရာနိ ဓာရေဟိ, နိမန္တနာနိ စ ဘုဉ္ဇာဟိ, မမ စ သန္တိကေ ဝိဟရာဟီ”တိ၊
“You’re old now, Kassapa. Those worn-out hempen rag robes must be a burden for you. So Kassapa, you should wear clothes given by householders, accept invitations for the meal, and stay in my presence.”
“အဟံ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဒီဃရတ္တံ အာရညိကော စေဝ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကော စေဝ ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပံသုကူလိကော စေဝ ပံသုကူလိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, တေစီဝရိကော စေဝ တေစီဝရိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, အပ္ပိစ္ဆော စေဝ အပ္ပိစ္ဆတာယ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, သန္တုဋ္ဌော စေဝ သန္တုဋ္ဌိယာ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပဝိဝိတ္တော စေဝ ပဝိဝေကဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, အသံသဋ္ဌော စေဝ အသံသဂ္ဂဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော စေဝ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ”တိ၊
“For a long time, sir, I’ve lived in the wilderness, eaten only almsfood, worn rag robes, and owned just three robes; and I’ve praised these things. I’ve been one of few wishes, content, secluded, aloof, and energetic; and I’ve praised these things.”
“ကိံ ပန တွံ, ကဿပ, အတ္ထဝသံ သမ္ပဿမာနော ဒီဃရတ္တံ အာရညိကော စေဝ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကော စေဝ …ပေ… ပံသုကူလိကော စေဝ … တေစီဝရိကော စေဝ … အပ္ပိစ္ဆော စေဝ … သန္တုဋ္ဌော စေဝ … ပဝိဝိတ္တော စေဝ … အသံသဋ္ဌော စေဝ … အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော စေဝ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ”တိ?
“But seeing what benefit, Kassapa, have you long practiced these things?”
“ဒွေ ခွါဟံ, ဘန္တေ, အတ္ထဝသေ သမ္ပဿမာနော ဒီဃရတ္တံ အာရညိကော စေဝ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကော စေဝ …ပေ… ပံသုကူလိကော စေဝ … တေစီဝရိကော စေဝ … အပ္ပိစ္ဆော စေဝ … သန္တုဋ္ဌော စေဝ … ပဝိဝိတ္တော စေဝ … အသံသဋ္ဌော စေဝ … အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော စေဝ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ၊
“Sir, seeing two benefits I have long practiced these things.
အတ္တနော စ ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မသုခဝိဟာရံ သမ္ပဿမာနော, ပစ္ဆိမဉ္စ ဇနတံ အနုကမ္ပမာနော: ‘အပ္ပေဝ နာမ ပစ္ဆိမာ ဇနတာ ဒိဋ္ဌာနုဂတိံ အာပဇ္ဇေယျုံ၊ ယေ ကိရ တေ အဟေသုံ ဗုဒ္ဓါနုဗုဒ္ဓသာဝကာ တေ ဒီဃရတ္တံ အာရညိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော …ပေ… ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ …ပေ… ပံသုကူလိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ … တေစီဝရိကာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ … အပ္ပိစ္ဆာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ … သန္တုဋ္ဌာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ … ပဝိဝိတ္တာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ … အသံသဋ္ဌာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ … အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယာ စေဝ အဟေသုံ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒိနော'တိ၊ တေ တထတ္တာယ ပဋိပဇ္ဇိဿန္တိ, တေသံ တံ ဘဝိဿတိ ဒီဃရတ္တံ ဟိတာယ သုခါယ၊
I see a happy life for myself in the present. And I have compassion for future generations, thinking: ‘Hopefully those who come after might follow my example.’ For they may think: ‘It seems that the awakened disciples of the Buddha for a long time lived in the wilderness, ate only almsfood, wore rag robes, and owned just three robes; and they praised these things. They were of few wishes, content, secluded, aloof, and energetic; and they praised these things.’ They’ll practice accordingly, which will be for their lasting welfare and happiness.
ဣမေ ခွါဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဒွေ အတ္ထဝသေ သမ္ပဿမာနော ဒီဃရတ္တံ အာရညိကော စေဝ အာရညိကတ္တဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ, ပိဏ္ဍပါတိကော စေဝ …ပေ… ပံသုကူလိကော စေဝ … တေစီဝရိကော စေဝ … အပ္ပိစ္ဆော စေဝ … သန္တုဋ္ဌော စေဝ … ပဝိဝိတ္တော စေဝ … အသံသဋ္ဌော စေဝ … အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော စေဝ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏဝါဒီ”တိ၊
Seeing these two benefits I have long practiced these things.”
“သာဓု သာဓု, ကဿပ၊ ဗဟုဇနဟိတာယ ကိရ တွံ, ကဿပ, ပဋိပန္နော ဗဟုဇနသုခါယ လောကာနုကမ္ပာယ အတ္ထာယ ဟိတာယ သုခါယ ဒေဝမနုဿာနံ၊ တသ္မာတိဟ တွံ, ကဿပ, သာဏာနိ စေဝ ပံသုကူလာနိ ဓာရေဟိ နိဗ္ဗသနာနိ, ပိဏ္ဍာယ စ စရာဟိ, အရညေ စ ဝိဟရာဟီ”တိ၊
“Good, good, Kassapa! You’re acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. So Kassapa, wear worn-out hempen rag robes, walk for alms, and stay in the wilderness.”
