With Potaliya the Wanderer
အထ ခေါ ပေါတလိယော ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝတာ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နံ ခေါ ပေါတလိယံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then the wanderer Potaliya went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side, and the Buddha said to him:
“စတ္တာရောမေ, ပေါတလိယ, ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော?
“Potaliya, these four people are found in the world. What four?
ဣဓ, ပေါတလိယ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ခေါ ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊
One person criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. But they don’t praise those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly.
ဣဓ ပန, ပေါတလိယ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ခေါ အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊
Another person praises those deserving of praise … But they don’t criticize those deserving of criticism …
ဣဓ ပန, ပေါတလိယ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော နေဝ အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊
Another person doesn’t praise those deserving of praise … Nor do they criticize those deserving of criticism …
ဣဓ ပန, ပေါတလိယ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊
Another person criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. And they praise those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly.
ဣမေ ခေါ, ပေါတလိယ, စတ္တာရော ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ဣမေသံ ခေါ, ပေါတလိယ, စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ ကတမော တေ ပုဂ္ဂလော ခမတိ အဘိက္ကန္တတရော စ ပဏီတတရော စာ”တိ?
These are the four people found in the world. Of these four people, who do you believe to be the finest?”
“စတ္တာရောမေ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော? ဣဓ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ခေါ ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊ ဣဓ ပန, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ခေါ အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊ ဣဓ ပန, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော နေဝ အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊ ဣဓ ပန, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ဧကစ္စော ပုဂ္ဂလော အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန၊ ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, စတ္တာရော ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ဣမေသံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ ယွာယံ ပုဂ္ဂလော နေဝ အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, နော စ ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန; အယံ မေ ပုဂ္ဂလော ခမတိ ဣမေသံ စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ အဘိက္ကန္တတရော စ ပဏီတတရော စ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? အဘိက္ကန္တာ ဟေသာ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ယဒိဒံ ဥပေက္ခာ”တိ၊
“Master Gotama, of these four people, it is the person who neither praises those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly; nor criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly. That is the person I believe to be the finest. Why is that? Because, Master Gotama, equanimity is the best.”
“စတ္တာရောမေ, ပေါတလိယ, ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော …ပေ… ဣမေ ခေါ, ပေါတလိယ, စတ္တာရော ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ဣမေသံ ခေါ, ပေါတလိယ, စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ ယွာယံ ပုဂ္ဂလော အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဟောတိ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန; အယံ ဣမေသံ စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ အဘိက္ကန္တတရော စ ပဏီတတရော စ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? အဘိက္ကန္တာ ဟေသာ, ပေါတလိယ, ယဒိဒံ တတ္ထ တတ္ထ ကာလညုတာ”တိ၊
“Potaliya, of these four people, it is the person who criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly; and praises those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly. That is the person I consider to be the finest. Why is that? Because, Potaliya, understanding of time and context is the best.”
“စတ္တာရောမေ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ကတမေ စတ္တာရော …ပေ… ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, စတ္တာရော ပုဂ္ဂလာ သန္တော သံဝိဇ္ဇမာနာ လောကသ္မိံ၊ ဣမေသံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ ယွာယံ ပုဂ္ဂလော အဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ အဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန, ဝဏ္ဏာရဟဿ စ ဝဏ္ဏံ ဘာသိတာ ဘူတံ တစ္ဆံ ကာလေန; အယံ မေ ပုဂ္ဂလော ခမတိ ဣမေသံ စတုန္နံ ပုဂ္ဂလာနံ အဘိက္ကန္တတရော စ ပဏီတတရော စ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? အဘိက္ကန္တာ ဟေသာ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, ယဒိဒံ တတ္ထ တတ္ထ ကာလညုတာ၊
“Master Gotama, of these four people, it is the person who criticizes those deserving of criticism at the right time, truthfully and correctly; and praises those deserving of praise at the right time, truthfully and correctly. That is the person I believe to be the finest. Why is that? Because, Master Gotama, understanding of time and context is the best.
အဘိက္ကန္တံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, အဘိက္ကန္တံ, ဘော ဂေါတမ၊ သေယျထာပိ, ဘော ဂေါတမ, နိက္ကုဇ္ဇိတံ ဝါ ဥက္ကုဇ္ဇေယျ, ပဋိစ္ဆန္နံ ဝါ ဝိဝရေယျ, မူဠှဿ ဝါ မဂ္ဂံ အာစိက္ခေယျ, အန္ဓကာရေ ဝါ တေလပဇ္ဇောတံ ဓာရေယျ: ‘စက္ခုမန္တော ရူပါနိ ဒက္ခန္တီ'တိ; ဧဝမေဝံ ဘောတာ ဂေါတမေန အနေကပရိယာယေန ဓမ္မော ပကာသိတော၊ ဧသာဟံ ဘဝန္တံ ဂေါတမံ သရဏံ ဂစ္ဆာမိ ဓမ္မဉ္စ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃဉ္စ၊ ဥပါသကံ မံ ဘဝံ ဂေါတမော ဓာရေတု အဇ္ဇတဂ္ဂေ ပါဏုပေတံ သရဏံ ဂတန်”တိ၊
Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Master Gotama has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to Master Gotama, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
