14. A Warrior
ปฐมโมรนิวาปสุตฺต
At the Peacocks’ Feeding Ground (1st)
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา ราชคเห วิหรติ โมรนิวาเป ปริพฺพาชการาเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, at the monastery of the wanderers in the peacocks’ feeding ground. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“ตีหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อจฺจนฺตนิฏฺโฐ โหติ อจฺจนฺตโยคกฺเขมี อจฺจนฺตพฺรหฺมจารี อจฺจนฺตปริโยสาโน เสฏฺโฐ เทวมนุสฺสานํฯ กตเมหิ ตีหิ? อเสกฺเขน สีลกฺขนฺเธน, อเสกฺเขน สมาธิกฺขนฺเธน, อเสกฺเขน ปญฺญากฺขนฺเธนฯ
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are the best among gods and humans. What three? The entire spectrum of an adept’s ethics, samādhi, and wisdom.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อจฺจนฺตนิฏฺโฐ โหติ อจฺจนฺตโยคกฺเขมี อจฺจนฺตพฺรหฺมจารี อจฺจนฺตปริโยสาโน เสฏฺโฐ เทวมนุสฺสานนฺ”ติฯ
A bhikkhu with these three qualities has reached the ultimate end, the ultimate sanctuary from the yoke, the ultimate spiritual life, the ultimate goal. They are the best among gods and humans.”
