อสฺสาชานียสุตฺต
The Thoroughbred
“ตโย จ, ภิกฺขเว, ภเทฺร อสฺสาชานีเย เทเสสฺสามิ ตโย จ ภเทฺร ปุริสาชานีเยฯ ตํ สุณาถ, สาธุกํ มนสิ กโรถ, ภาสิสฺสามี”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you the three fine thoroughbred horses, and the three fine thoroughbred people. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ติ โข เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“กตเม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ภทฺรา อสฺสาชานียา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย …เป… ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ
“What are the three fine thoroughbred horses? One fine thoroughbred horse … is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ภทฺรา อสฺสาชานียาฯ
These are the three fine thoroughbred horses.
กตเม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ภทฺรา ปุริสาชานียา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ภโทฺร ปุริสาชานีโย …เป… ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ
And what are the three fine thoroughbred people? One fine thoroughbred person … is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภโทฺร ปุริสาชานีโย …เป… ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อิทมสฺส ชวสฺมึ วทามิฯ อภิธมฺเม โข ปน อภิวินเย ปญฺหํ ปุฏฺโฐ วิสฺสชฺเชติ, โน สํสาเทติฯ อิทมสฺส วณฺณสฺมึ วทามิฯ ลาภี โข ปน โหติ จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปฺปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานํฯ อิทมสฺส อาโรหปริณาหสฺมึ วทามิฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภโทฺร ปุริสาชานีโย ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ
And how is a fine thoroughbred person … fast, beautiful, and well proportioned? It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. This is how they’re fast, I say. When asked a question about the teaching or training, they answer without faltering. This is how they’re beautiful, I say. They receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. This is how they’re well proportioned, I say. This is how a fine thoroughbred person is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ภทฺรา ปุริสาชานียา”ติฯ
These are the three fine thoroughbred people.”
