Five Kings
សាវត្ថិនិទានំ។
At Sāvatthī.
តេន ខោ បន សមយេន បញ្ចន្នំ រាជូនំ បសេនទិបមុខានំ បញ្ចហិ កាមគុណេហិ សមប្បិតានំ សមង្គីភូតានំ បរិចារយមានានំ អយមន្តរាកថា ឧទបាទិ: “កិំ នុ ខោ កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ?
Now at that time five kings headed by Pasenadi were amusing themselves, supplied and provided with the five kinds of sensual stimulation, and this discussion came up among them: “What’s the best of sensual pleasures?”
តត្រេកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: “រូបា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ។
Some of them said, “Sights are the best of sensual pleasures!”
ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: “សទ្ទា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ។
Others said, “Sounds are best!”
ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: “គន្ធា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ។
Others said, “Smells are best!”
ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: “រសា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ។
Others said, “Tastes are best!”
ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: “ផោដ្ឋព្ពា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ។
Others said, “Touches are best!”
យតោ ខោ តេ រាជានោ នាសក្ខិំសុ អញ្ញមញ្ញំ សញ្ញាបេតុំ។ អថ ខោ រាជា បសេនទិ កោសលោ តេ រាជានោ ឯតទវោច: “អាយាម, មារិសា, យេន ភគវា តេនុបសង្កមិស្សាម; ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ភគវន្តំ ឯតមត្ថំ បដិបុច្ឆិស្សាម។ យថា នោ ភគវា ព្យាករិស្សតិ តថា នំ ធារេស្សាមា”តិ។
Since those kings were unable to persuade each other, King Pasenadi said to them, “Come, good sirs, let’s go to the Buddha and ask him about this. As he answers, so we’ll remember it.”
“ឯវំ, មារិសា”តិ ខោ តេ រាជានោ រញ្ញោ បសេនទិស្ស កោសលស្ស បច្ចស្សោសុំ។
“Yes, dear sir,” replied those kings.
អថ ខោ តេ បញ្ច រាជានោ បសេនទិបមុខា យេន ភគវា តេនុបសង្កមិំសុ; ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ភគវន្តំ អភិវាទេត្វា ឯកមន្តំ និសីទិំសុ។ ឯកមន្តំ និសិន្នោ ខោ រាជា បសេនទិ កោសលោ ភគវន្តំ ឯតទវោច: “ឥធ, ភន្តេ, អម្ហាកំ បញ្ចន្នំ រាជូនំ បញ្ចហិ កាមគុណេហិ សមប្បិតានំ សមង្គីភូតានំ បរិចារយមានានំ អយមន្តរាកថា ឧទបាទិ: ‘កិំ នុ ខោ កាមានំ អគ្គន៑ៜតិ? ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: ‘រូបា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑ៜតិ។ ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: ‘សទ្ទា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑ៜតិ។ ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: ‘គន្ធា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑ៜតិ។ ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: ‘រសា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑ៜតិ។ ឯកច្ចេ ឯវមាហំសុ: ‘ផោដ្ឋព្ពា កាមានំ អគ្គន៑ៜតិ។ កិំ នុ ខោ, ភន្តេ, កាមានំ អគ្គន៑”តិ?
Then those five kings headed by Pasenadi went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. King Pasenadi reported their conversation to the Buddha, and said, “Sir, what’s the best of sensual pleasures?”
“មនាបបរិយន្តំ ខ្វាហំ, មហារាជ, បញ្ចសុ កាមគុណេសុ អគ្គន្តិ វទាមិ។ តេវ, មហារាជ, រូបា ឯកច្ចស្ស មនាបា ហោន្តិ, តេវ រូបា ឯកច្ចស្ស អមនាបា ហោន្តិ។ យេហិ ច យោ រូបេហិ អត្តមនោ ហោតិ បរិបុណ្ណសង្កប្បោ, សោ តេហិ រូបេហិ អញ្ញំ រូបំ ឧត្តរិតរំ វា បណីតតរំ វា ន បត្ថេតិ។ តេ តស្ស រូបា បរមា ហោន្តិ។ តេ តស្ស រូបា អនុត្តរា ហោន្តិ។
“Great king, which kind of sensual stimulation is best is defined by which is most agreeable, I say. The very same sights that are agreeable to some are disagreeable to others. When you’re happy with certain sights, as you’ve got all you wished for, you don’t want any other sight that’s better or finer. For you, those sights are perfect and supreme.
តេវ, មហារាជ, សទ្ទា ឯកច្ចស្ស មនាបា ហោន្តិ, តេវ សទ្ទា ឯកច្ចស្ស អមនាបា ហោន្តិ។ យេហិ ច យោ សទ្ទេហិ អត្តមនោ ហោតិ បរិបុណ្ណសង្កប្បោ, សោ តេហិ សទ្ទេហិ អញ្ញំ សទ្ទំ ឧត្តរិតរំ វា បណីតតរំ វា ន បត្ថេតិ។ តេ តស្ស សទ្ទា បរមា ហោន្តិ។ តេ តស្ស សទ្ទា អនុត្តរា ហោន្តិ។ តេវ, មហារាជ, គន្ធា ឯកច្ចស្ស មនាបា ហោន្តិ, តេវ គន្ធា ឯកច្ចស្ស អមនាបា ហោន្តិ។ យេហិ ច យោ គន្ធេហិ អត្តមនោ ហោតិ បរិបុណ្ណសង្កប្បោ, សោ តេហិ គន្ធេហិ អញ្ញំ គន្ធំ ឧត្តរិតរំ វា បណីតតរំ វា ន បត្ថេតិ។ តេ តស្ស គន្ធា បរមា ហោន្តិ។ តេ តស្ស គន្ធា អនុត្តរា ហោន្តិ។ តេវ, មហារាជ, រសា ឯកច្ចស្ស មនាបា ហោន្តិ, តេវ រសា ឯកច្ចស្ស អមនាបា ហោន្តិ។ យេហិ ច យោ រសេហិ អត្តមនោ ហោតិ បរិបុណ្ណសង្កប្បោ, សោ តេហិ រសេហិ អញ្ញំ រសំ ឧត្តរិតរំ វា បណីតតរំ វា ន បត្ថេតិ។ តេ តស្ស រសា បរមា ហោន្តិ។ តេ តស្ស រសា អនុត្តរា ហោន្តិ។ តេវ, មហារាជ, ផោដ្ឋព្ពា ឯកច្ចស្ស មនាបា ហោន្តិ, តេវ ផោដ្ឋព្ពា ឯកច្ចស្ស អមនាបា ហោន្តិ។ យេហិ ច យោ ផោដ្ឋព្ពេហិ អត្តមនោ ហោតិ បរិបុណ្ណសង្កប្បោ, សោ តេហិ ផោដ្ឋព្ពេហិ អញ្ញំ ផោដ្ឋព្ពំ ឧត្តរិតរំ វា បណីតតរំ វា ន បត្ថេតិ។ តេ តស្ស ផោដ្ឋព្ពា បរមា ហោន្តិ។ តេ តស្ស ផោដ្ឋព្ពា អនុត្តរា ហោន្តី”តិ។
The very same sounds … smells … tastes … touches that are agreeable to some are disagreeable to others. When you’re happy with certain touches, as you’ve got all you wished for, you don’t want any other touch that’s better or finer. For you, those touches are perfect and supreme.”
តេន ខោ បន សមយេន ចន្ទនង្គលិកោ ឧបាសកោ តស្សំ បរិសាយំ និសិន្នោ ហោតិ។ អថ ខោ ចន្ទនង្គលិកោ ឧបាសកោ ឧដ្ឋាយាសនា ឯកំសំ ឧត្តរាសង្គំ ករិត្វា យេន ភគវា តេនញ្ជលិំ បណាមេត្វា ភគវន្តំ ឯតទវោច: “បដិភាតិ មំ, ភគវា, បដិភាតិ មំ, សុគតា”តិ។
Now at that time the lay follower Candanaṅgalika was sitting in that assembly. Then he got up from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said, “I feel inspired to speak, Blessed One! I feel inspired to speak, Holy One!”
“បដិភាតុ តំ, ចន្ទនង្គលិកា”តិ ភគវា អវោច។
“Then speak as you feel inspired,” said the Buddha.
អថ ខោ ចន្ទនង្គលិកោ ឧបាសកោ ភគវតោ សម្មុខា តទនុរូបាយ គាថាយ អភិត្ថវិ:
Then the lay follower Candanaṅgalika extolled the Buddha in his presence with an appropriate verse:
“បទុមំ យថា កោកនទំ សុគន្ធំ, បាតោ សិយា ផុល្លមវីតគន្ធំ; អង្គីរសំ បស្ស វិរោចមានំ, តបន្តមាទិច្ចមិវន្តលិក្ខេ”តិ។
“Like a fragrant pink lotus that blooms in the morning, its fragrance unfaded—see Aṅgīrasa shine, bright as the sun in the sky!”
អថ ខោ តេ បញ្ច រាជានោ ចន្ទនង្គលិកំ ឧបាសកំ បញ្ចហិ ឧត្តរាសង្គេហិ អច្ឆាទេសុំ។ អថ ខោ ចន្ទនង្គលិកោ ឧបាសកោ តេហិ បញ្ចហិ ឧត្តរាសង្គេហិ ភគវន្តំ អច្ឆាទេសីតិ។
Then those five kings clothed Candanaṅgalika with five upper robes. And Candanaṅgalika in turn endowed the Buddha with those robes.
