Lomasakaṅgiya and One Fine Night
ឯវំ មេ សុតំ—ឯកំ សមយំ ភគវា សាវត្ថិយំ វិហរតិ ជេតវនេ អនាថបិណ្ឌិកស្ស អារាមេ។
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
តេន ខោ បន សមយេន អាយស្មា លោមសកង្គិយោ សក្កេសុ វិហរតិ កបិលវត្ថុស្មិំ និគ្រោធារាមេ។
Now at that time Venerable Lomasakaṅgiya was staying in the Sakyan country at Kapilavatthu in the Banyan Tree Monastery.
អថ ខោ ចន្ទនោ ទេវបុត្តោ អភិក្កន្តាយ រត្តិយា អភិក្កន្តវណ្ណោ កេវលកប្បំ និគ្រោធារាមំ ឱភាសេត្វា យេនាយស្មា លោមសកង្គិយោ តេនុបសង្កមិ; ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ឯកមន្តំ អដ្ឋាសិ។ ឯកមន្តំ ឋិតោ ខោ ចន្ទនោ ទេវបុត្តោ អាយស្មន្តំ លោមសកង្គិយំ ឯតទវោច:
Then, late at night, the glorious god Candana, lighting up the entire Banyan Tree Monastery, went up to the Venerable Lomasakaṅgiya, and stood to one side. Standing to one side, he said to Lomasakaṅgiya:
“ធារេសិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ចា”តិ?
“Bhikkhu, do you remember the recitation passage and analysis of One Fine Night?”
“ន ខោ អហំ, អាវុសោ, ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច។ ត្វំ បនាវុសោ, ធារេសិ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ចា”តិ?
“No, friend, I do not. Do you?”
“អហម្បិ ខោ, ភិក្ខុ, ន ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច។ ធារេសិ បន ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា”តិ?
“I also do not. But do you remember just the verses on One Fine Night?”
“ន ខោ អហំ, អាវុសោ, ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា។ ត្វំ បនាវុសោ, ធារេសិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា”តិ?
“I do not. Do you?”
“ធារេមិ ខោ អហំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា”តិ។
“I do.”
“យថា កថំ បន ត្វំ, អាវុសោ, ធារេសិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា”តិ?
“How do you remember the verses on One Fine Night?”
“ឯកមិទំ, ភិក្ខុ, សមយំ ភគវា ទេវេសុ តាវតិំសេសុ វិហរតិ បារិច្ឆត្តកមូលេ បណ្ឌុកម្ពលសិលាយំ។ តត្រ ភគវា ទេវានំ តាវតិំសានំ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច អភាសិ:
“This one time, the Buddha was staying among the gods of the Thirty-Three at the root of the Shady Orchid Tree on the stone spread with a cream rug. There he taught the recitation passage and analysis of One Fine Night to the gods of the Thirty-Three:
‘អតីតំ នាន្វាគមេយ្យ, នប្បដិកង្ខេ អនាគតំ; យទតីតំ បហីនំ តំ, អប្បត្តញ្ច អនាគតំ។
‘Don’t run back to the past, don’t hope for the future. What’s past is left behind; the future has not arrived;
បច្ចុប្បន្នញ្ច យោ ធម្មំ, តត្ថ តត្ថ វិបស្សតិ; អសំហីរំ អសង្កុប្បំ, តំ វិទ្វា មនុព្រូហយេ។
and phenomena in the present are clearly seen in every case. Knowing this, foster it—unfaltering, unshakable.
អជ្ជេវ កិច្ចមាតប្បំ, កោ ជញ្ញា មរណំ សុវេ; ន ហិ នោ សង្គរំ តេន, មហាសេនេន មច្ចុនា។
Today’s the day to keenly work—who knows, tomorrow may bring death! For there is no bargain to be struck with Death and his mighty hordes.
ឯវំវិហារិំ អាតាបិំ, អហោរត្តមតន្ទិតំ; តំ វេ ភទ្ទេករត្តោតិ, សន្តោ អាចិក្ខតេ មុនីៜតិ។
The peaceful sage explained it’s those who keenly meditate like this, tireless all night and day, who truly have that one fine night.’
ឯវំ ខោ អហំ, ភិក្ខុ, ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា។ ឧគ្គណ្ហាហិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច; បរិយាបុណាហិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច; ធារេហិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច។ អត្ថសំហិតោ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសោ ច វិភង្គោ ច អាទិព្រហ្មចរិយកោ”តិ។
That’s how I remember the verses of One Fine Night. Learn the recitation passage and analysis of One Fine Night, bhikkhu, memorize it, and remember it. It is beneficial and relates to the fundamentals of the spiritual life.”
ឥទមវោច ចន្ទនោ ទេវបុត្តោ។ ឥទំ វត្វា តត្ថេវន្តរធាយិ។
That’s what the god Candana said before vanishing right there.
អថ ខោ អាយស្មា លោមសកង្គិយោ តស្សា រត្តិយា អច្ចយេន សេនាសនំ សំសាមេត្វា បត្តចីវរមាទាយ យេន សាវត្ថិ តេន ចារិកំ បក្កាមិ។ អនុបុព្ពេន ចារិកំ ចរមានោ យេន សាវត្ថិ ជេតវនំ អនាថបិណ្ឌិកស្ស អារាមោ យេន ភគវា តេនុបសង្កមិ; ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ភគវន្តំ អភិវាទេត្វា ឯកមន្តំ និសីទិ។ ឯកមន្តំ និសិន្នោ ខោ អាយស្មា លោមសកង្គិយោ ភគវន្តំ ឯតទវោច:
Then Lomasakaṅgiya set his lodgings in order and, taking his bowl and robe, set out for Sāvatthī. Eventually he came to Sāvatthī and Jeta’s Grove. He went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened. Then he added:
“ឯកមិទាហំ, ភន្តេ, សមយំ សក្កេសុ វិហរាមិ កបិលវត្ថុស្មិំ និគ្រោធារាមេ។ អថ ខោ, ភន្តេ, អញ្ញតរោ ទេវបុត្តោ អភិក្កន្តាយ រត្តិយា អភិក្កន្តវណ្ណោ កេវលកប្បំ និគ្រោធារាមំ ឱភាសេត្វា យេនាហំ តេនុបសង្កមិ; ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ឯកមន្តំ អដ្ឋាសិ។ ឯកមន្តំ ឋិតោ ខោ, ភន្តេ, សោ ទេវបុត្តោ មំ ឯតទវោច: ‘ធារេសិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ចាៜតិ? ឯវំ វុត្តេ, អហំ, ភន្តេ, តំ ទេវបុត្តំ ឯតទវោចំ: ‘ន ខោ អហំ, អាវុសោ, ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច។ ត្វំ បនាវុសោ, ធារេសិ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ចាៜតិ? ‘អហម្បិ ខោ, ភិក្ខុ, ន ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច។ ធារេសិ បន ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថាៜតិ? ‘ន ខោ អហំ, អាវុសោ, ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា។ ត្វំ បនាវុសោ, ធារេសិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថាៜតិ? ‘ធារេមិ ខោ អហំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថាៜតិ។ ‘យថា កថំ បន ត្វំ, អាវុសោ, ធារេសិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថាៜតិ? ‘ឯកមិទំ, ភិក្ខុ, សមយំ ភគវា ទេវេសុ តាវតិំសេសុ វិហរតិ បារិច្ឆត្តកមូលេ បណ្ឌុកម្ពលសិលាយំ។ តត្រ ខោ ភគវា ទេវានំ តាវតិំសានំ ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច អភាសិ:
“អតីតំ នាន្វាគមេយ្យ, …បេ… តំ វេ ភទ្ទេករត្តោតិ, សន្តោ អាចិក្ខតេ មុនី”តិ។
ឯវំ ខោ អហំ, ភិក្ខុ, ធារេមិ ភទ្ទេករត្តិយោ គាថា។ ឧគ្គណ្ហាហិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច; បរិយាបុណាហិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច; ធារេហិ ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច។ អត្ថសំហិតោ, ភិក្ខុ, ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសោ ច វិភង្គោ ច អាទិព្រហ្មចរិយកោៜតិ។
ឥទមវោច, ភន្តេ, សោ ទេវបុត្តោ។ ឥទំ វត្វា តត្ថេវន្តរធាយិ។ សាធុ មេ, ភន្តេ, ភគវា ភទ្ទេករត្តស្ស ឧទ្ទេសញ្ច វិភង្គញ្ច ទេសេតូ”តិ។
“Sir, please teach me the recitation passage and analysis of One Fine night.”
“ជានាសិ បន ត្វំ, ភិក្ខុ, តំ ទេវបុត្តន៑”តិ?
“But bhikkhu, do you know that god?”
“ន ខោ អហំ, ភន្តេ, ជានាមិ តំ ទេវបុត្តន៑”តិ។
“I do not, sir.”
“ចន្ទនោ នាម សោ, ភិក្ខុ, ទេវបុត្តោ។ ចន្ទនោ, ភិក្ខុ, ទេវបុត្តោ អដ្ឋិំ កត្វា មនសិកត្វា សព្ពចេតសា សមន្នាហរិត្វា ឱហិតសោតោ ធម្មំ សុណាតិ។ តេន ហិ, ភិក្ខុ, សុណាហិ, សាធុកំ មនសិ ករោហិ; ភាសិស្សាមី”តិ។
“That god was named Candana. Candana pays attention, applies the mind, concentrates wholeheartedly, and actively listens to the teaching. Well then, bhikkhu, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“ឯវំ, ភន្តេ”តិ ខោ អាយស្មា លោមសកង្គិយោ ភគវតោ បច្ចស្សោសិ។ ភគវា ឯតទវោច:
“Yes, sir,” Lomasakaṅgiya replied. The Buddha said this:
“អតីតំ នាន្វាគមេយ្យ, នប្បដិកង្ខេ អនាគតំ; យទតីតំ បហីនំ តំ, អប្បត្តញ្ច អនាគតំ។

That is what the Buddha said. Satisfied, Venerable Lomasakaṅgiya was happy with what the Buddha said.
លោមសកង្គិយភទ្ទេករត្តសុត្តំ និដ្ឋិតំ ចតុត្ថំ។
