Old Age
ឯវំ មេ សុតំ … រាជគហេ វេឡុវនេ។ អថ ខោ អាយស្មា មហាកស្សបោ យេន ភគវា តេនុបសង្កមិ; ឧបសង្កមិត្វា ភគវន្តំ អភិវាទេត្វា ឯកមន្តំ និសីទិ។ ឯកមន្តំ និសិន្នំ ខោ អាយស្មន្តំ មហាកស្សបំ ភគវា ឯតទវោច:
So I have heard. Near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove. Then Venerable Mahākassapa went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“ជិណ្ណោសិ ទានិ ត្វំ, កស្សប, គរុកានិ ច តេ ឥមានិ សាណានិ បំសុកូលានិ និព្ពសនានិ។ តស្មាតិហ ត្វំ, កស្សប, គហបតានិ ចេវ ចីវរានិ ធារេហិ, និមន្តនានិ ច ភុញ្ជាហិ, មម ច សន្តិកេ វិហរាហី”តិ។
“You’re old now, Kassapa. Those worn-out hempen rag robes must be a burden for you. So Kassapa, you should wear clothes given by householders, accept invitations for the meal, and stay in my presence.”
“អហំ ខោ, ភន្តេ, ទីឃរត្តំ អារញ្ញិកោ ចេវ អារញ្ញិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, បិណ្ឌបាតិកោ ចេវ បិណ្ឌបាតិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, បំសុកូលិកោ ចេវ បំសុកូលិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, តេចីវរិកោ ចេវ តេចីវរិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, អប្បិច្ឆោ ចេវ អប្បិច្ឆតាយ ច វណ្ណវាទី, សន្តុដ្ឋោ ចេវ សន្តុដ្ឋិយា ច វណ្ណវាទី, បវិវិត្តោ ចេវ បវិវេកស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, អសំសដ្ឋោ ចេវ អសំសគ្គស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, អារទ្ធវីរិយោ ចេវ វីរិយារម្ភស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី”តិ។
“For a long time, sir, I’ve lived in the wilderness, eaten only almsfood, worn rag robes, and owned just three robes; and I’ve praised these things. I’ve been one of few wishes, content, secluded, aloof, and energetic; and I’ve praised these things.”
“កិំ បន ត្វំ, កស្សប, អត្ថវសំ សម្បស្សមានោ ទីឃរត្តំ អារញ្ញិកោ ចេវ អារញ្ញិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, បិណ្ឌបាតិកោ ចេវ …បេ… បំសុកូលិកោ ចេវ … តេចីវរិកោ ចេវ … អប្បិច្ឆោ ចេវ … សន្តុដ្ឋោ ចេវ … បវិវិត្តោ ចេវ … អសំសដ្ឋោ ចេវ … អារទ្ធវីរិយោ ចេវ វីរិយារម្ភស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី”តិ?
“But seeing what benefit, Kassapa, have you long practiced these things?”
“ទ្វេ ខ្វាហំ, ភន្តេ, អត្ថវសេ សម្បស្សមានោ ទីឃរត្តំ អារញ្ញិកោ ចេវ អារញ្ញិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, បិណ្ឌបាតិកោ ចេវ …បេ… បំសុកូលិកោ ចេវ … តេចីវរិកោ ចេវ … អប្បិច្ឆោ ចេវ … សន្តុដ្ឋោ ចេវ … បវិវិត្តោ ចេវ … អសំសដ្ឋោ ចេវ … អារទ្ធវីរិយោ ចេវ វីរិយារម្ភស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី។
“Sir, seeing two benefits I have long practiced these things.
អត្តនោ ច ទិដ្ឋធម្មសុខវិហារំ សម្បស្សមានោ, បច្ឆិមញ្ច ជនតំ អនុកម្បមានោ: ‘អប្បេវ នាម បច្ឆិមា ជនតា ទិដ្ឋានុគតិំ អាបជ្ជេយ្យុំ។ យេ កិរ តេ អហេសុំ ពុទ្ធានុពុទ្ធសាវកា តេ ទីឃរត្តំ អារញ្ញិកា ចេវ អហេសុំ អារញ្ញិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទិនោ …បេ… បិណ្ឌបាតិកា ចេវ អហេសុំ …បេ… បំសុកូលិកា ចេវ អហេសុំ … តេចីវរិកា ចេវ អហេសុំ … អប្បិច្ឆា ចេវ អហេសុំ … សន្តុដ្ឋា ចេវ អហេសុំ … បវិវិត្តា ចេវ អហេសុំ … អសំសដ្ឋា ចេវ អហេសុំ … អារទ្ធវីរិយា ចេវ អហេសុំ វីរិយារម្ភស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទិនោៜតិ។ តេ តថត្តាយ បដិបជ្ជិស្សន្តិ, តេសំ តំ ភវិស្សតិ ទីឃរត្តំ ហិតាយ សុខាយ។
I see a happy life for myself in the present. And I have compassion for future generations, thinking: ‘Hopefully those who come after might follow my example.’ For they may think: ‘It seems that the awakened disciples of the Buddha for a long time lived in the wilderness, ate only almsfood, wore rag robes, and owned just three robes; and they praised these things. They were of few wishes, content, secluded, aloof, and energetic; and they praised these things.’ They’ll practice accordingly, which will be for their lasting welfare and happiness.
ឥមេ ខ្វាហំ, ភន្តេ, ទ្វេ អត្ថវសេ សម្បស្សមានោ ទីឃរត្តំ អារញ្ញិកោ ចេវ អារញ្ញិកត្តស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី, បិណ្ឌបាតិកោ ចេវ …បេ… បំសុកូលិកោ ចេវ … តេចីវរិកោ ចេវ … អប្បិច្ឆោ ចេវ … សន្តុដ្ឋោ ចេវ … បវិវិត្តោ ចេវ … អសំសដ្ឋោ ចេវ … អារទ្ធវីរិយោ ចេវ វីរិយារម្ភស្ស ច វណ្ណវាទី”តិ។
Seeing these two benefits I have long practiced these things.”
“សាធុ សាធុ, កស្សប។ ពហុជនហិតាយ កិរ ត្វំ, កស្សប, បដិបន្នោ ពហុជនសុខាយ លោកានុកម្បាយ អត្ថាយ ហិតាយ សុខាយ ទេវមនុស្សានំ។ តស្មាតិហ ត្វំ, កស្សប, សាណានិ ចេវ បំសុកូលានិ ធារេហិ និព្ពសនានិ, បិណ្ឌាយ ច ចរាហិ, អរញ្ញេ ច វិហរាហី”តិ។
“Good, good, Kassapa! You’re acting for the welfare and happiness of the people, out of compassion for the world, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. So Kassapa, wear worn-out hempen rag robes, walk for alms, and stay in the wilderness.”
