Established by the United Nations in 2014 following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the annual observance has grown into a global movement promoting healthier lifestyles and inner balance.

In India, Prime Minister Modi led the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations in Kolkata, describing yoga as the world's largest community movement and encouraging people to make it part of their daily lives. He said yoga supports physical fitness, mental health and healthy ageing, the theme of this year's event.

President Droupadi Murmu, speaking at celebrations in Jabalpur, called yoga India's gift to the world and said it promotes peace and harmony amid global challenges.

Yoga events were held across India and around the world, drawing participation from government leaders, healthcare professionals, students, military personnel and yoga enthusiasts.

The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said yoga has become a universal practice that helps millions improve their physical and mental well-being.

The widespread participation underscored yoga's growing global appeal as a tool for health, resilience and holistic wellness.
