อวชานาติสุตฺต
Scorn
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? ทตฺวา อวชานาติ, สํวาเสน อวชานาติ, อาเธยฺยมุโข โหติ, โลโล โหติ, มนฺโท โมมูโห โหติฯ
“Bhikkhus, these five people are found in the world. What five? One gives then scorns, one lives together then scorns, one is gullible for gossip, one is impulsive, and one is dull and stupid.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ทตฺวา อวชานาติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ปุคฺคลสฺส เทติ จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปฺปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารํฯ ตสฺส เอวํ โหติ: ‘อหํ เทมิ; อยํ ปฏิคฺคณฺหาตี'ติฯ ตเมนํ ทตฺวา อวชานาติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ทตฺวา อวชานาติฯ
And how does a person give then scorn? It’s when a person gives someone robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. They think: ‘I give; this one receives.’ They give to that person, then they scorn them. That’s how a person gives then scorns.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สํวาเสน อวชานาติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ปุคฺคเลน สทฺธึ สํวสติ เทฺว วา ตีณิ วา วสฺสานิฯ ตเมนํ สํวาเสน อวชานาติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สํวาเสน อวชานาติฯ
And how does a person live together then scorn? It’s when a person lives with someone else for two or three years. They live together with that person, then they scorn them. That’s how a person live together then scorns.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาเธยฺยมุโข โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ปรสฺส วณฺเณ วา อวณฺเณ วา ภาสิยมาเน ตํ ขิปฺปญฺเญว อธิมุจฺจิตา โหติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อาเธยฺยมุโข โหติฯ
And how is a person gullible for gossip? It’s when they’re very quick to believe what a certain person says in praise or criticism of another. That’s how a person is gullible for gossip.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล โลโล โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อิตฺตรสทฺโธ โหติ อิตฺตรภตฺตี อิตฺตรเปโม อิตฺตรปฺปสาโทฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล โลโล โหติฯ
And how is a person impulsive? It’s when a certain person is fickle in faith, devotion, fondness, and confidence. That’s how a person is impulsive.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล มนฺโท โมมูโห โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล กุสลากุสเล ธมฺเม น ชานาติ, สาวชฺชานวชฺเช ธมฺเม น ชานาติ, หีนปฺปณีเต ธมฺเม น ชานาติ, กณฺหสุกฺกสปฺปฏิภาเค ธมฺเม น ชานาติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล มนฺโท โมมูโห โหติฯ
And how is a person dull and stupid? It’s when they don’t know the difference between qualities that are skillful and unskillful, blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, and those on the side of dark and bright. That’s how a person is dull and stupid.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These are the five people found in the world.”
