Diligence
“ยาวตา, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตา อปทา วา ทฺวิปทา วา จตุปฺปทา วา พหุปฺปทา วา รูปิโน วา อรูปิโน วา สญฺญิโน วา อสญฺญิโน วา เนวสญฺญินาสญฺญิโน วา, ตถาคโต เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ อรหํ สมฺมาสมฺพุทฺโธ; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, เย เกจิ กุสลา ธมฺมา, สพฺเพ เต อปฺปมาทมูลกา อปฺปมาทสโมสรณาฯ อปฺปมาโท เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติฯ
“Bhikkhus, the Realized One, the perfected one, the fully awakened Buddha, is said to be the best of all sentient beings—be they footless, with two feet, four feet, or many feet; with form or formless; with perception or without perception or with neither perception nor non-perception. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.
เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, ยานิ กานิจิ ชงฺคลานํ ปาณานํ ปทชาตานิ, สพฺพานิ ตานิ หตฺถิปเท สโมธานํ คจฺฉนฺติ, หตฺถิปทํ เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ, ยทิทํ มหนฺตตฺเตน; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, เย เกจิ กุสลา ธมฺมา, สพฺเพ เต อปฺปมาทมูลกา อปฺปมาทสโมสรณาฯ อปฺปมาโท เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติฯ
The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint, so an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.
เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, กูฏาคารสฺส ยา กาจิ โคปานสิโย สพฺพา ตา กูฏงฺคมา กูฏนินฺนา กูฏสโมสรณา, กูโฏ ตาสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, เย เกจิ กุสลา ธมฺมา, สพฺเพ เต อปฺปมาทมูลกา อปฺปมาทสโมสรณาฯ อปฺปมาโท เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติฯ
The rafters of a bungalow all lean to the peak, slope to the peak, and meet at the peak, so the peak is said to be the topmost of them all. In the same way, all skillful qualities are rooted in diligence and meet at diligence, and diligence is said to be the best of them.
