อนิจฺจานุปสฺสีสุตฺต
Watching, again and again, impermanence
“สตฺติเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา อาหุเนยฺยา ปาหุเนยฺยา ทกฺขิเณยฺยา อญฺชลิกรณียา อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ กตเม สตฺต?
“Bhikkhus, these seven people are worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and are the supreme field of merit for the world. What seven?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล สพฺพสงฺขาเรสุ อนิจฺจานุปสฺสี วิหรติ, อนิจฺจสญฺญี, อนิจฺจปฏิสํเวที สตตํ สมิตํ อพฺโพกิณฺณํ เจตสา อธิมุจฺจมาโน ปญฺญาย ปริโยคาหมาโนฯ โส อาสวานํ ขยา …เป… สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม ปุคฺคโล อาหุเนโยฺย ปาหุเนโยฺย ทกฺขิเณโยฺย อญฺชลิกรณีโย อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ
First, take a person who meditates watching, again and again, impermanence in all conditions. They recognize the impermanence and feel deeply the impermanence. Constantly, continually, and without interruption, they apply the mind and fathom with wisdom. They’ve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. This is the first person.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล สพฺพสงฺขาเรสุ อนิจฺจานุปสฺสี วิหรติ, อนิจฺจสญฺญี, อนิจฺจปฏิสํเวที สตตํ สมิตํ อพฺโพกิณฺณํ เจตสา อธิมุจฺจมาโน ปญฺญาย ปริโยคาหมาโนฯ ตสฺส อปุพฺพํ อจริมํ อาสวปริยาทานญฺจ โหติ ชีวิตปริยาทานญฺจฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติโย ปุคฺคโล อาหุเนโยฺย …เป… อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ
Next, take a person who meditates watching, again and again, impermanence in all conditions. Their defilements and their life come to an end at exactly the same time. This is the second person.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล สพฺพสงฺขาเรสุ อนิจฺจานุปสฺสี วิหรติ, อนิจฺจสญฺญี, อนิจฺจปฏิสํเวที สตตํ สมิตํ อพฺโพกิณฺณํ เจตสา อธิมุจฺจมาโน ปญฺญาย ปริโยคาหมาโนฯ โส ปญฺจนฺนํ โอรมฺภาคิยานํ สํโยชนานํ ปริกฺขยา อนฺตราปรินิพฺพายี โหติ …เป…

อุทฺธํโสโต โหติ อกนิฏฺฐคามีฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตโม ปุคฺคโล อาหุเนโยฺย ปาหุเนโยฺย ทกฺขิเณโยฺย อญฺชลิกรณีโย อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ
With the ending of the five lower fetters they head upstream, going to the Akaniṭṭha realm. This is the seventh person.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺต ปุคฺคลา อาหุเนยฺยา ปาหุเนยฺยา ทกฺขิเณยฺยา อญฺชลิกรณียา อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสา”ติฯ
These are the seven people who are worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of greeting with joined palms, and are the supreme field of merit for the world.”
