อุคฺคสุตฺต
With Ugga
อถ โข อุคฺโค ราชมหามตฺโต เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อุคฺโค ราชมหามตฺโต ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ: “อจฺฉริยํ, ภนฺเต, อพฺภุตํ, ภนฺเตฯ ยาว อฑฺโฒ จายํ, ภนฺเต, มิคาโร โรหเณโยฺย ยาว มหทฺธโน ยาว มหาโภโค”ติฯ
Then Ugga the government minister went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! Migāra of Rohaṇa is so rich, so very wealthy.”
“กีว อฑฺโฒ ปนุคฺค, มิคาโร โรหเณโยฺย, กีว มหทฺธโน, กีว มหาโภโค”ติ?
“But Ugga, how rich is he?”
“สตํ, ภนฺเต, สตสหสฺสานํ หิรญฺญสฺส, โก ปน วาโท รูปิยสฺสา”ติฯ
“He has a hundred thousand gold coins, not to mention the silver!”
“อตฺถิ โข เอตํ, อุคฺค, ธนํ เนตํ ‘นตฺถี'ติ วทามีติฯ ตญฺจ โข เอตํ, อุคฺค, ธนํ สาธารณํ อคฺคินา อุทเกน ราชูหิ โจเรหิ อปฺปิเยหิ ทายาเทหิฯ สตฺต โข อิมานิ, อุคฺค, ธนานิ อสาธารณานิ อคฺคินา อุทเกน ราชูหิ โจเรหิ อปฺปิเยหิ ทายาเทหิฯ กตมานิ สตฺต? สทฺธาธนํ, สีลธนํ, หิรีธนํ, โอตฺตปฺปธนํ, สุตธนํ, จาคธนํ, ปญฺญาธนํฯ อิมานิ โข, อุคฺค, สตฺต ธนานิ อสาธารณานิ อคฺคินา อุทเกน ราชูหิ โจเรหิ อปฺปิเยหิ ทายาเทหีติฯ
“Well, Ugga, that is wealth, I can’t deny it. But fire, water, rulers, thieves, and unloved heirs all take a share of that wealth. There are these seven kinds of wealth that they can’t take a share of. What seven? The wealth of faith, ethics, conscience, prudence, learning, generosity, and wisdom. There are these seven kinds of wealth that fire, water, rulers, thieves, and unloved heirs can’t take a share of.
สทฺธาธนํ สีลธนํ, หิรี โอตฺตปฺปิยํ ธนํ; สุตธนญฺจ จาโค จ, ปญฺญา เว สตฺตมํ ธนํฯ
Faith and ethical conduct are kinds of wealth, as are conscience and prudence, learning and generosity, and wisdom is the seventh kind of wealth.
ยสฺส เอเต ธนา อตฺถิ, อิตฺถิยา ปุริสสฺส วา; ส เว มหทฺธโน โลเก, อเชโยฺย เทวมานุเสฯ
When a woman or man has these kinds of wealth, they’re really rich in the world, invincible among gods and humans.
ตสฺมา สทฺธญฺจ สีลญฺจ, ปสาทํ ธมฺมทสฺสนํ; อนุยุญฺเชถ เมธาวี, สรํ พุทฺธาน สาสนนฺ”ติฯ
So let the wise devote themselves to faith, ethical behavior, confidence, and insight into the teaching, remembering the instructions of the Buddhas.”
