ปฐมปิยสุตฺต
Pleasing (1st)
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“สตฺตหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ อปฺปิโย จ โหติ อมนาโป จ อครุ จ อภาวนีโย จฯ กตเมหิ สตฺตหิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ลาภกาโม จ โหติ, สกฺการกาโม จ โหติ, อนวญฺญตฺติกาโม จ โหติ, อหิริโก จ โหติ, อโนตฺตปฺปี จ, ปาปิจฺโฉ จ, มิจฺฉาทิฏฺฐิ จฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ อปฺปิโย จ โหติ อมนาโป จ อครุ จ อภาวนีโย จฯ
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with seven qualities is disliked and disapproved by their spiritual companions, not respected or admired. What seven? It’s when a bhikkhu desires material possessions, honor, and to be looked up to. They lack conscience and prudence. They have corrupt wishes and wrong view. A bhikkhu with these seven qualities is disliked and disapproved by their spiritual companions, not respected or admired.
สตฺตหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จ โหติ, มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จฯ กตเมหิ สตฺตหิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น ลาภกาโม จ โหติ, น สกฺการกาโม จ โหติ, น อนวญฺญตฺติกาโม จ โหติ, หิรีมา จ โหติ, โอตฺตปฺปี จ, อปฺปิจฺโฉ จ, สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิ จฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ สพฺรหฺมจารีนํ ปิโย จ โหติ มนาโป จ ครุ จ ภาวนีโย จา”ติฯ
A bhikkhu with seven qualities is liked and approved by their spiritual companions, respected and admired. What seven? It’s when a bhikkhu doesn’t desire material possessions, honor, and to be looked up to. They have conscience and prudence. They have few desires and right view. A bhikkhu with these seven qualities is liked and approved by their spiritual companions, respected and admired.”
