Obstacles to Rain
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, วสฺสสฺส อนฺตรายา, ยํ เนมิตฺตา น ชานนฺติ, ยตฺถ เนมิตฺตานํ จกฺขุ น กมติฯ กตเม ปญฺจ?
“Bhikkhus, there are these five obstacles to rain, which the forecasters don’t know, and which their vision does not traverse. What five?
อุปริ, ภิกฺขเว, อากาเส เตโชธาตุ ปกุปฺปติฯ เตน อุปฺปนฺนา เมฆา ปฏิวิคจฺฉนฺติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม วสฺสสฺส อนฺตราโย, ยํ เนมิตฺตา น ชานนฺติ, ยตฺถ เนมิตฺตานํ จกฺขุ น กมติฯ
In the upper atmosphere the fire element flares up, which disperses the clouds. This is the first obstacle to rain, which the forecasters don’t know, and which their vision does not traverse.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, อุปริ อากาเส วาโยธาตุ ปกุปฺปติฯ เตน อุปฺปนฺนา เมฆา ปฏิวิคจฺฉนฺติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติโย วสฺสสฺส อนฺตราโย, ยํ เนมิตฺตา น ชานนฺติ, ยตฺถ เนมิตฺตานํ จกฺขุ น กมติฯ
