Those Who Eat Only From the Almsbowl
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปตฺตปิณฺฑิกาฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? มนฺทตฺตา โมมูหตฺตา ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติ, ปาปิจฺโฉ อิจฺฉาปกโต ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติ, อุมฺมาทา จิตฺตกฺเขปา ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติ, ‘วณฺณิตํ พุทฺเธหิ พุทฺธสาวเกหี'ติ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติ, อปฺปิจฺฉตํเยว นิสฺสาย สนฺตุฏฺฐึเยว นิสฺสาย สเลฺลขํเยว นิสฺสาย ปวิเวกํเยว นิสฺสาย อิทมตฺถิตํเยว นิสฺสาย ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิกาฯ อิเมสํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจนฺนํ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิกานํ ยฺวายํ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก อปฺปิจฺฉตํเยว นิสฺสาย สนฺตุฏฺฐึเยว นิสฺสาย สเลฺลขํเยว นิสฺสาย ปวิเวกํเยว นิสฺสาย อิทมตฺถิตํเยว นิสฺสาย ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติ, อยํ อิเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิกานํ อคฺโค จ เสฏฺโฐ จ โมกฺโข จ อุตฺตโม จ ปวโร จฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these five kinds of people who eat only from the almsbowl. What five? A person may eat only from the almsbowl because of stupidity and folly. Or because of corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament. Or because of madness and mental disorder. Or because it is praised by the Buddhas and their disciples. Or for the sake of having few wishes, for the sake of contentment, self-effacement, seclusion, and simplicity. These are the five kinds of people who eat only from the almsbowl. But the person who eats only from the almsbowl for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five.
เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, ควา ขีรํ, ขีรมฺหา ทธิ, ทธิมฺหา นวนีตํ, นวนีตมฺหา สปฺปิ, สปฺปิมฺหา สปฺปิมณฺโฑ, สปฺปิมณฺโฑ ตตฺถ อคฺคมกฺขายติ; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อิเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิกานํ ยฺวายํ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก อปฺปิจฺฉตํเยว นิสฺสาย สนฺตุฏฺฐึเยว นิสฺสาย สเลฺลขํเยว นิสฺสาย ปวิเวกํเยว นิสฺสาย อิทมตฺถิตํเยว นิสฺสาย ปตฺตปิณฺฑิโก โหติ, อยํ อิเมสํ ปญฺจนฺนํ ปตฺตปิณฺฑิกานํ อคฺโค จ เสฏฺโฐ จ โมกฺโข จ อุตฺตโม จ ปวโร จา”ติฯ
From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. And the cream of ghee is said to be the best of these. In the same way, the person who eats only from the almsbowl for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five.”
