Remembering What You’ve Learned
“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อานาปานสฺสตึ อาเสวนฺโต นจิรเสฺสว อกุปฺปํ ปฏิวิชฺฌติฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ?
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu cultivating mindfulness of breathing who has five things will soon penetrate the unshakable. What five?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อปฺปฏฺโฐ โหติ อปฺปกิจฺโจ สุภโร สุสนฺโตโส ชีวิตปริกฺขาเรสุ;
It’s when a bhikkhu has few requirements and duties, and is unburdensome and contented with life’s necessities.
อปฺปาหาโร โหติ อโนทริกตฺตํ อนุยุตฺโต;
They eat little, not devoted to filling their stomach.
อปฺปมิทฺโธ โหติ ชาคริยํ อนุยุตฺโต;
They are rarely drowsy, and are dedicated to wakefulness.
พหุสฺสุโต โหติ สุตธโร สุตสนฺนิจโย, เย เต ธมฺมา อาทิกลฺยาณา มชฺเฌกลฺยาณา ปริโยสานกลฺยาณา สาตฺถํ สพฺยญฺชนํ เกวลปริปุณฺณํ ปริสุทฺธํ พฺรหฺมจริยํ อภิวทนฺติ, ตถารูปาสฺส ธมฺมา พหุสฺสุตา โหนฺติ ธาตา วจสา ปริจิตา มนสานุเปกฺขิตา ทิฏฺฐิยา สุปฺปฏิวิทฺธา;
They’re very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reinforcing them by recitation, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
ยถาวิมุตฺตํ จิตฺตํ ปจฺจเวกฺขติฯ
They review the extent of their mind’s freedom.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อานาปานสฺสตึ อาเสวนฺโต นจิรเสฺสว อกุปฺปํ ปฏิวิชฺฌตี”ติฯ
A bhikkhu cultivating mindfulness of breathing who has these five things will soon penetrate the unshakable.”
