ဧကံ သမယံ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ရာဇဂဟေ ဝိဟရတိ ဝေဠုဝနေ ကလန္ဒကနိဝါပေ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ ရာဇဂဟေ ပိဏ္ဍာယ ပါဝိသိ၊ ရာဇဂဟေ သပဒါနံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတွာ တံ ပိဏ္ဍပါတံ အညတရံ ကုဋ္ဋမူလံ နိဿာယ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ၊
At one time Venerable Sāriputta was staying near Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground. Then he robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Rājagaha for alms. After wandering indiscriminately for almsfood in Rājagaha, he ate his almsfood by a wall.
အထ ခေါ သုစိမုခီ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇိကာ ယေနာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ အာယသ္မန္တံ သာရိပုတ္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then the wanderer Sucimukhī went up to Venerable Sāriputta and said to him:
“ကိံ နု ခေါ, သမဏ, အဓောမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ”တိ?
“Ascetic, do you eat facing downwards?”
“န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, အဓောမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ”တိ၊
“No, sister.”
“တေန ဟိ, သမဏ, ဥဗ္ဘမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ”တိ?
“Well then, do you eat facing upwards?”
“န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, ဥဗ္ဘမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ”တိ၊
“No, sister.”
“တေန ဟိ, သမဏ, ဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ”တိ?
“Well then, do you eat facing the cardinal directions?”
“န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, ဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ”တိ၊
“No, sister.”
“တေန ဟိ, သမဏ, ဝိဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ”တိ?
“Well then, do you eat facing the intermediate directions?”
“န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, ဝိဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ”တိ၊
“No, sister.”
“‘ကိံ နု, သမဏ, အဓောမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ'တိ ဣတိ ပုဋ္ဌော သမာနော ‘န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, အဓောမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ'တိ ဝဒေသိ၊ ‘တေန ဟိ, သမဏ, ဥဗ္ဘမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ'တိ ဣတိ ပုဋ္ဌော သမာနော ‘န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, ဥဗ္ဘမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ'တိ ဝဒေသိ၊ ‘တေန ဟိ, သမဏ, ဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ'တိ ဣတိ ပုဋ္ဌော သမာနော ‘န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, ဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ'တိ ဝဒေသိ၊ ‘တေန ဟိ, သမဏ, ဝိဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇသီ'တိ ဣတိ ပုဋ္ဌော သမာနော ‘န ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, ဝိဒိသာမုခေါ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ'တိ ဝဒေသိ၊ ကထဉ္စရဟိ, သမဏ, ဘုဉ္ဇသီ”တိ?
“When asked if you eat facing all these directions, you answer ‘no, sister’. How exactly do you eat, ascetic?”
“ယေ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ ဝတ္ထုဝိဇ္ဇာတိရစ္ဆာနဝိဇ္ဇာယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေန္တိ, ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ ‘အဓောမုခါ ဘုဉ္ဇန္တီ'တိ၊
“Sister, those ascetics and brahmins who earn a living by geomancy—a low lore, a wrong livelihood—are said to eat facing downwards.
ယေ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ နက္ခတ္တဝိဇ္ဇာတိရစ္ဆာနဝိဇ္ဇာယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေန္တိ, ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ ‘ဥဗ္ဘမုခါ ဘုဉ္ဇန္တီ'တိ၊
Those ascetics and brahmins who earn a living by astrology—a low lore, a wrong livelihood—are said to eat facing upwards.
ယေ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ ဒူတေယျပဟိဏဂမနာနုယောဂါယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေန္တိ, ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ ‘ဒိသာမုခါ ဘုဉ္ဇန္တီ'တိ၊
Those ascetics and brahmins who earn a living by running errands and messages—a wrong livelihood—are said to eat facing the cardinal directions.
ယေ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ အင်္ဂဝိဇ္ဇာတိရစ္ဆာနဝိဇ္ဇာယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေန္တိ, ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဘဂိနိ, သမဏဗြာဟ္မဏာ ‘ဝိဒိသာမုခါ ဘုဉ္ဇန္တီ'တိ၊
Those ascetics and brahmins who earn a living by palmistry—a low lore, a wrong livelihood—are said to eat facing the intermediate directions.
သော ခွါဟံ, ဘဂိနိ, န ဝတ္ထုဝိဇ္ဇာတိရစ္ဆာနဝိဇ္ဇာယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေမိ, န နက္ခတ္တဝိဇ္ဇာတိရစ္ဆာနဝိဇ္ဇာယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေမိ, န ဒူတေယျပဟိဏဂမနာနုယောဂါယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေမိ, န အင်္ဂဝိဇ္ဇာတိရစ္ဆာနဝိဇ္ဇာယ မိစ္ဆာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိကံ ကပ္ပေမိ၊ ဓမ္မေန ဘိက္ခံ ပရိယေသာမိ; ဓမ္မေန ဘိက္ခံ ပရိယေသိတွာ ဘုဉ္ဇာမီ”တိ၊
I don’t earn a living by any of these means. I seek alms in a principled manner, and I eat it in a principled manner.”
အထ ခေါ သုစိမုခီ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇိကာ ရာဇဂဟေ ရထိယာယ ရထိယံ, သိင်္ဃာဋကေန သိင်္ဃာဋကံ ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဧဝမာရောစေသိ: “ဓမ္မိကံ သမဏာ သကျပုတ္တိယာ အာဟာရံ အာဟာရေန္တိ; အနဝဇ္ဇံ သမဏာ သကျပုတ္တိယာ အာဟာရံ အာဟာရေန္တိ၊ ဒေထ သမဏာနံ သကျပုတ္တိယာနံ ပိဏ္ဍန်”တိ၊
Then Sucimukhī the wanderer went around Rājagaha from street to street and from square to square, and announced: “The Sakyan ascetics eat food in a principled manner! The Sakyan ascetics eat food blamelessly! Give almsfood to the Sakyan ascetics!”
