သမဏသုခုမာလသုတ္တ
An Exquisite Ascetic of Ascetics
“ပဉ္စဟိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော ဘိက္ခု သမဏေသု သမဏသုခုမာလော ဟောတိ၊
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with five qualities is an exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
ကတမေဟိ ပဉ္စဟိ?
What five?
ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ စီဝရံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော; ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ ပိဏ္ဍပါတံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော; ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ သေနာသနံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော; ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ ဂိလာနပစ္စယဘေသဇ္ဇပရိက္ခာရံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇတိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော၊
It’s when a bhikkhu usually uses only what they’ve been invited to accept—robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick—rarely using them without invitation.
ယေဟိ ခေါ ပန သဗြဟ္မစာရီဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ ဝိဟရတိ, တျဿ မနာပေနေဝ ဗဟုလံ ကာယကမ္မေန သမုဒါစရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပေန; မနာပေနေဝ ဗဟုလံ ဝစီကမ္မေန သမုဒါစရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပေန; မနာပေနေဝ ဗဟုလံ မနောကမ္မေန သမုဒါစရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပေန; မနာပံယေဝ ဥပဟာရံ ဥပဟရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပံ၊
When living with other spiritual practitioners, they usually treat them agreeably by way of body, speech, and mind, and rarely disagreeably. And they usually present them with agreeable things, rarely with disagreeable ones.
ယာနိ ခေါ ပန တာနိ ဝေဒယိတာနိ ပိတ္တသမုဋ္ဌာနာနိ ဝါ သေမှသမုဋ္ဌာနာနိ ဝါ ဝါတသမုဋ္ဌာနာနိ ဝါ သန္နိပါတိကာနိ ဝါ ဥတုပရိဏာမဇာနိ ဝါ ဝိသမပရိဟာရဇာနိ ဝါ ဩပက္ကမိကာနိ ဝါ ကမ္မဝိပါကဇာနိ ဝါ, တာနိဿ န ဗဟုဒေဝ ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇန္တိ၊
They’re healthy, so the various unpleasant feelings—stemming from disorders of bile, phlegm, wind, or their conjunction; or caused by change in weather, by not taking care of themselves, by overexertion, or as the result of past deeds—usually don’t come up.
အပ္ပါဗာဓော ဟောတိ, စတုန္နံ ဈာနာနံ အာဘိစေတသိကာနံ ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မသုခဝိဟာရာနံ နိကာမလာဘီ ဟောတိ အကိစ္ဆလာဘီ အကသိရလာဘီ,
They get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
အာသဝါနံ ခယာ အနာသဝံ စေတောဝိမုတ္တိံ ပညာဝိမုတ္တိံ ဒိဋ္ဌေဝ ဓမ္မေ သယံ အဘိညာ သစ္ဆိကတွာ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊
And they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
ဣမေဟိ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပဉ္စဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ သမန္နာဂတော ဘိက္ခု သမဏေသု သမဏသုခုမာလော ဟောတိ၊
A bhikkhu with these five qualities is an exquisite ascetic of ascetics.
ယဉှိ တံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ: ‘သမဏေသု သမဏသုခုမာလော'တိ, မမေဝ တံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ: ‘သမဏေသု သမဏသုခုမာလော'တိ၊ အဟဉှိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ စီဝရံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇာမိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော; ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ ပိဏ္ဍပါတံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇာမိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော; ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ သေနာသနံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇာမိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော; ယာစိတောဝ ဗဟုလံ ဂိလာနပစ္စယဘေသဇ္ဇပရိက္ခာရံ ပရိဘုဉ္ဇာမိ, အပ္ပံ အယာစိတော၊ ယေဟိ ခေါ ပန ဘိက္ခူဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ ဝိဟရာမိ, တေ မံ မနာပေနေဝ ဗဟုလံ ကာယကမ္မေန သမုဒါစရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပေန; မနာပေနေဝ ဗဟုလံ ဝစီကမ္မေန သမုဒါစရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပေန; မနာပေနေဝ ဗဟုလံ မနောကမ္မေန သမုဒါစရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပေန; မနာပံယေဝ ဥပဟာရံ ဥပဟရန္တိ, အပ္ပံ အမနာပံ၊ ယာနိ ခေါ ပန တာနိ ဝေဒယိတာနိ—ပိတ္တသမုဋ္ဌာနာနိ ဝါ သေမှသမုဋ္ဌာနာနိ ဝါ ဝါတသမုဋ္ဌာနာနိ ဝါ သန္နိပါတိကာနိ ဝါ ဥတုပရိဏာမဇာနိ ဝါ ဝိသမပရိဟာရဇာနိ ဝါ ဩပက္ကမိကာနိ ဝါ ကမ္မဝိပါကဇာနိ ဝါ—တာနိ မေ န ဗဟုဒေဝ ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇန္တိ၊ အပ္ပါဗာဓောဟမသ္မိ၊ စတုန္နံ ခေါ ပနသ္မိ ဈာနာနံ အာဘိစေတသိကာနံ ဒိဋ္ဌဓမ္မသုခဝိဟာရာနံ နိကာမလာဘီ အကိစ္ဆလာဘီ အကသိရလာဘီ, အာသဝါနံ ခယာ …ပေ… သစ္ဆိကတွာ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရာမိ၊ ယဉှိ တံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ: ‘သမဏေသု သမဏသုခုမာလော'တိ, မမေဝ တံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာ ဝဒမာနော ဝဒေယျ: ‘သမဏေသု သမဏသုခုမာလော'”တိ၊
And if anyone should be rightly called an exquisite ascetic of ascetics, it’s me. For I usually use only what I’ve been invited to accept. When living with other spiritual practitioners, I usually treat them agreeably. And I usually present them with agreeable things. I’m healthy. I get the four jhānas when I want, without trouble or difficulty. And I’ve realized the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. So if anyone should be rightly called an exquisite ascetic of ascetics, it’s me.”
