အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ သာဝတ္ထိံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ ပါဝိသိ၊ အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မတော သာရိပုတ္တဿ ဧတဒဟောသိ: “အတိပ္ပဂေါ ခေါ တာဝ သာဝတ္ထိယံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတုံ၊ ယန္နူနာဟံ ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမေယျန်”တိ၊
Then Venerable Sāriputta robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, entered Sāvatthī for alms. Then it occurred to him, “It’s too early to wander for alms in Sāvatthī. Why don’t I go to the monastery of the wanderers of other religions?”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ တေဟိ အညတိတ္ထိယေဟိ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကေဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊
Then he went to the monastery of the wanderers of other religions, and exchanged greetings with the wanderers there. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side.
တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ သန္နိသိန္နာနံ သန္နိပတိတာနံ အယမန္တရာကထာ ဥဒပါဒိ: “ယော ဟိ ကောစိ, အာဝုသော, ဒွါဒသဝဿာနိ ပရိပုဏ္ဏံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ စရတိ, ‘နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခူ'တိ အလံဝစနာယာ”တိ၊
Now at that time while those wanderers of other religions were sitting together this discussion came up among them, “Friends, anyone who lives the full and pure spiritual life for twelve years is qualified to be called a ‘graduate bhikkhu’.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ ဘာသိတံ နေဝ အဘိနန္ဒိ နပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိ၊ အနဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ပက္ကာမိ: “ဘဂဝတော သန္တိကေ ဧတဿ ဘာသိတဿ အတ္ထံ အာဇာနိဿာမီ”တိ၊
Sāriputta neither approved nor dismissed that statement of the wanderers of other religions. He got up from his seat, thinking, “I will learn the meaning of this statement from the Buddha himself.”
အထ ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော သာဝတ္ထိယံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတွာ ပစ္ဆာဘတ္တံ ပိဏ္ဍပါတပဋိက္ကန္တော ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ အာယသ္မာ သာရိပုတ္တော ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
Then Sāriputta wandered for alms in Sāvatthī. After the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him what had happened, adding:
“ဣဓာဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ သာဝတ္ထိံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ ပါဝိသိံ၊ တဿ မယှံ, ဘန္တေ, ဧတဒဟောသိ: ‘အတိပ္ပဂေါ ခေါ တာဝ သာဝတ္ထိယံ ပိဏ္ဍာယ စရိတုံ၊ ယန္နူနာဟံ ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမေယျန်'တိ၊ အထ ခွါဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ယေန အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ အာရာမော တေနုပသင်္ကမိံ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ တေဟိ အညတိတ္ထိယေဟိ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကေဟိ သဒ္ဓိံ သမ္မောဒိံ၊ သမ္မောဒနီယံ ကထံ သာရဏီယံ ဝီတိသာရေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိံ၊ တေန ခေါ ပန, ဘန္တေ, သမယေန တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ သန္နိသိန္နာနံ သန္နိပတိတာနံ အယမန္တရာကထာ ဥဒပါဒိ: ‘ယော ဟိ ကောစိ, အာဝုသော, ဒွါဒသဝဿာနိ ပရိပုဏ္ဏံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ စရတိ, နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခူတိ အလံဝစနာယာ'တိ၊ အထ ခွါဟံ, ဘန္တေ, တေသံ အညတိတ္ထိယာနံ ပရိဗ္ဗာဇကာနံ ဘာသိတံ နေဝ အဘိနန္ဒိံ နပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိံ၊ အနဘိနန္ဒိတွာ အပ္ပဋိက္ကောသိတွာ ဥဋ္ဌာယာသနာ ပက္ကမိံ: ‘ဘဂဝတော သန္တိကေ ဧတဿ အတ္ထံ အာဇာနိဿာမီ'တိ၊ သက္ကာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ကေဝလံ ဝဿဂဏနမတ္တေန နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခု ပညာပေတုန်”တိ?
“Sir, in this teaching and training can we describe a bhikkhu as a ‘graduate’ solely because they have completed a certain number of years?”
“န ခေါ, သာရိပုတ္တ, သက္ကာ ဣမသ္မိံ ဓမ္မဝိနယေ ကေဝလံ ဝဿဂဏနမတ္တေန နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခု ပညာပေတုံ၊ သတ္တ ခေါ ဣမာနိ, သာရိပုတ္တ, နိဒ္ဒသဝတ္ထူနိ မယာ သယံ အဘိညာ သစ္ဆိကတွာ ပဝေဒိတာနိ၊
“No, Sāriputta, we cannot. I make known these seven qualifications for graduation after realizing them with my own insight.
ကတမာနိ သတ္တ? ဣဓ, သာရိပုတ္တ, ဘိက္ခု သိက္ခာသမာဒါနေ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ သိက္ခာသမာဒါနေ အဝိဂတပေမော, ဓမ္မနိသန္တိယာ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ ဓမ္မနိသန္တိယာ အဝိဂတပေမော, ဣစ္ဆာဝိနယေ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ ဣစ္ဆာဝိနယေ အဝိဂတပေမော, ပဋိသလ္လာနေ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ ပဋိသလ္လာနေ အဝိဂတပေမော, ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘေ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ ဝီရိယာရမ္ဘေ အဝိဂတပေမော, သတိနေပက္ကေ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ သတိနေပက္ကေ အဝိဂတပေမော, ဒိဋ္ဌိပဋိဝေဓေ တိဗ္ဗစ္ဆန္ဒော ဟောတိ အာယတိဉ္စ ဒိဋ္ဌိပဋိဝေဓေ အဝိဂတပေမော၊ ဣမာနိ ခေါ, သာရိပုတ္တ, သတ္တ နိဒ္ဒသဝတ္ထူနိ မယာ သယံ အဘိညာ သစ္ဆိကတွာ ပဝေဒိတာနိ၊ ဣမေဟိ ခေါ, သာရိပုတ္တ, သတ္တဟိ နိဒ္ဒသဝတ္ထူဟိ သမန္နာဂတော ဘိက္ခု ဒွါဒသ စေပိ ဝဿာနိ ပရိပုဏ္ဏံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ စရတိ, ‘နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခူ'တိ အလံဝစနာယ; စတုဗ္ဗီသတိ စေပိ ဝဿာနိ ပရိပုဏ္ဏံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ စရတိ, ‘နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခူ'တိ အလံဝစနာယ; ဆတ္တိံသတိ စေပိ ဝဿာနိ ပရိပုဏ္ဏံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ စရတိ, ‘နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခူ'တိ အလံဝစနာယ, အဋ္ဌစတ္တာရီသဉ္စေပိ ဝဿာနိ ပရိပုဏ္ဏံ ပရိသုဒ္ဓံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ စရတိ, ‘နိဒ္ဒသော ဘိက္ခူ'တိ အလံဝစနာယာ”တိ၊
What seven? It’s when a bhikkhu has a keen enthusiasm to undertake the training … to examine the teachings … to get rid of desires … for retreat … to rouse up energy … for mindfulness and alertness … to penetrate theoretically. And they don’t lose these desires in the future. These are the seven qualifications for graduation that I make known after realizing them with my own insight. A bhikkhu who has these seven qualifications for graduation is qualified to be called a ‘graduate bhikkhu’. This is so whether they have lived the full and pure spiritual life for twelve years, twenty-four years, thirty-six years, or forty-eight years.”
